soy

Post by Leah »

Okay, I think it's time to get rid of soy. I ate a butternut squash soup yesterday that was made with soy milk and my gut started to hurt ( I first thought "soup. really?" ). Then for dinner, I had some pork roast and I felt even worse. I had marinated it in a gf teriyaki recipe. MISTAKE! So I am looking up recipes for SF teriyaki and squash soup made with coconut milk instead.
So sad :(

Leah I have three words.....Soy Is Evil.... At least for me, it's reaction is quicker and stronger than gluten, but also shorter lived and it's in everything it seems. I find this interesting as soy beans have little flavor of thier own.

Leah,

Can you tolerate garlic? My preferred seasoning for pork is plain garlic salt, with nothing else added. Pork and garlic salt were made for each other and IMO, nothing brings out the flavor of good pork better than garlic salt.

The problem with using sauces and seasonings that combine numerous ingredients is that as you add more ingredients, the odds of having a reaction increase exponentially.

Here's a simple rule for us to live by:

In general, short ingredient lists are associated with remission -- long ingredient lists are associated with reactions.

Me too. Soy is evil. The mere thought of eating it makes me queasy.

Hi Leah,
Once I stopped taking Entocort, I quickly learned what a problem soy was for me. Then when my Enterolab results arrived--- my soy number was higher than gluten! yes, it's evil. I react to it relatively quickly too. It's a challenge to do without, but not impossible.

hang in there,
Carol

Hi Leah
My soy number was the highest so I don't mess with it. I make a faux soy sauce with molasses, lea. & Perrins Worcestershire, garlic, balsamic vinegar and ginger. Pretty good.

Not that I'm so smart, though. I wondered why I Have had a reaction the last 2 days.....then it hit me! I ate a large helping of rice pilof not thinking that those little squiggles were pasta.

Thanks guys. Last night I made my own butternut squash soup and it turned out delicious! I used coconut milk to finish it. I put a bit of curry in it too. Yum.

Soy is an immediate problem for me to (sigh). I don't get D but an immediate and nasty dull stomach ache along with extreme fatigue. At this point, I can't tell if it's the food causing my eyes to burn and hurt but it was sad to give it up. I'd go through 1 1/2-2 gallons of soy milk a week. I never realized that like gluten, soy is in EVERYTHING. I've found myself getting thoroughly disgusted in the GF grocery aisle when I get my hopes up that there's something on the shelf for me only to find out there's soy (or dariy) in it.

I love almond milk also. But you're right Deb, soy seems to be in everything. I must say though that my reaction to it is slight if I take in only a small quantity. That goes for a lot of things actually. Small quantities of everything seems better.

There is a great recipe for "Winter Squash Soup" in Living Without magazine. It has butternut squash, apples, carrots, chicken stock (or water), any milk that works for you, lots of grated fresh ginger, a little maple syrup and some coconut milk. I make it by the gallon and freeze it in small containers. Just add a little chicken or other protein and it's a complete meal. It's never made me sick either.

Soy is poison. It gave me the first ever migraine headache I've ever had. I ate quite a bit of Tofutti ice cream to get that reaction. Even small amounts add to the daily misery index.

Leah,
I also don't seem to react to small amounts of soy - basically when it's used as an additive, soy lecithin, etc. I seem to do OK with GF soy sauce, and I've been telling myself it's because the soy protein is fermented and hydrolyzed, so it changes properties (much like milk allergic babies can drink hydrolyzed milk protein formula). Maybe I'm fooling myself :???:

I, too, am very suspicious that soy is sabotaging me...I use almond and rice milks, now, instead of soy, but anytime I eat a GF bread like Kinnikinnick, or a GF soy cracker, or use GF soy sauce, my stomach rumbles and I bloat and go back to D. For us, I guess, even GF foods are not safe. I'm tempted to go paleo or totally grain-free, but it's so limiting diet-wise! MC is such a life-changing disease. Celiacs think THEY have it bad!

Maggie
love it!
Any ingredient that can have more than 30 alias's (names) has got to be evil...

soy is my worst trigger .... and it is the easiest to get contaminated by when eating out or with others because it is in everything.
and keep in mind that the soy product that is in everything is GMO'd

sourcing hand and facial moisturisers including lip balms that are soy free was not easy at first but i have my staple products now and all is good

suggest that you take the list of soy name products from this post
http://www.perskyfarms.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=736

with you until you get to know the names and products that are safe
