I found this to be somewhat like "MC for Dummies" It's about 50 minutes long and worth every minute, IMO.

I found the link to this at this blog site: http://ethicaleats.blogspot.com/ for me the download took forever (about 7 minutes), however it was worth the wait - a seriously great discussion with a Pharmicist - Dr. BG, and Dr. Tim Gerstmar, an ND who works in Redmond, Wa. Dr. BG - the first in this video - who is an expert on leaky gut, gives a great explanation of dysbiosis, GERD, etc. Then Dr. Gerstmar talks about clinical applications.

ABSTRACT: The gut may be considered the mammalian second brain and its maximal function is related to many factors including diet, lifestyle, stress, exercise and a balanced microbial environment. How do we discern the intelligence quotient (IQ) of the gut and its impact on our metabolic, mental and sexual health? Why is it messed up? In this neolethal age, factors include: poor maternal transfer, dietary impact, pharmaceuticals (acid blockers, antibiotics, vaccines, hormones), poor water quality, excessive hygiene, heavy metals and other toxicants. Which inhabitants in your rainforest are endangered or extinct? Wow, thanks, Connie. I am looking forward to watching it later. Leaky gut is not something I understand all that well except that I have it.

Connie, I am also looking forward to watching this. I am concerned about leaky gut even now that I'm off meds and not in a flare, I still think I ache more than I should. Thanks for sharing this.

I went to Dr. Gerstmar's website after watching this in hopes that he would have information on GS, but so far have been disappointed that he didn't have more on it there. The video is somewhat frustrating in that the Dr.'s are using powerpoint presentations that don't show up on the video, there is a link on the first link I gave that shows the powerpoint stuff and so when you watch it, focus on that instead of on the Dr.'s. This option isn't available on the second link I left above and I am going to delete it. The blog I found this on has some good stuff too.

I was reading the notes below this and one of the statements was


- Think you might have gut dysbiosis? Tim explains an easy, do-it-yourself test on slide 33: take ¼ to 1 teaspoon of inulin, a natural soluble fiber found in chicory root and other foods. If it gives you a lot of gas and bloating, you have tested positive.
If this is legitimate, it might be an easy way to check our gut health. I can't help but think that many (most) would test positive though. I know of people using chicory root for sweeteners and having digestive reactions to it.

It's not legitimate. No one can digest inulin, and unless you have virtually no gut bacteria (because of taking antibiotics, or whatever), the inulin is going to promote bacterial fermentation. That's one of the selling points for it -- it's supposed to promote the growth of "good" gut bacteria. The only way that bacteria can "digest" inulin is by fermentation. Unfortunately, research proves that inulin also promotes the growth of "bad" gut bacteria just as much as it promotes the propagation of "good" bacteria.

I wondered about that too, thanks, Tex.

In retrospect I'm not sure I should have used the word Fabulous in my description here, but I felt that they still were informative in explaining the process by which foods we can't digest make us sick and depressed.
