I just received the following email from Dr. Fine and wanted to share it with you. The topic sure is interesting, isn't it?

I am giving a lecture in Phoenix AZ in the evening of October 19th.

How about getting the word out to your folks?

Also, a big weekend seminar in Dallas featuring lectures, organic (gluten-free) food, and musical performances by me is coming in the Spring 2006 in Dallas. I will email you more details when I have more to tell you. I would like to see the MC community come and meet me and one another. I plan several hours devoted to answering personal questions of people as well.

Hope all is well. I would love to see you and the gang in Dallas. Please help me get the early word out.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 19 at 6:30 pm for a special presentation by Kenneth D. Fine, M.D. Dr. Fine is an internationally renowned intestinal researcher and heads the Intestinal Health Institute. His topic will be “Is A Gluten-Free Diet Enough?” Dr. Fine’s presentation will be of special interest to those of us who continue to have health problems, despite strict adherence to a GF diet, and to people who are interested in improving their health.

We meet in the Asics Rooms 1 & 2 at Chandler Regional Hospital at 1875
West Frye Road, Chandler, AZ 85224. The major cross streets are Dobson &
Frye. The hospital is on the southeast corner. Please go to the Main
Lobby Entrance of the Hospital on Dobson (just south of the Emergency
Room) Go down to the basement via the first elevators. Go towards the
Pharmacy, and then continue down that hallway
to the room on the right. Meetings are from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

Here’s some more information on Dr. Fine: After obtaining his bachelor's degree in biology and his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Dr. Fine received 6 years of training in internal medicine and gastroenterology with a focus on intestinal research, from Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas. Dr. Fine has been part of Dallas' academic and clinical medical community for 15 years, holding staff positions at both Baylor University Medical Center and the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical School. His medical research publications have appeared in prestigious medical journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, Gastroenterology, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, and The American Journal of Gastroenterology.

"Among many important factors, I believe that maintenance of overall health requires intestinal health, as well as sound nutrition through consumption of naturally healthy foods,” says Dr. Fine. “I founded the intestinal health institute to be sure that the benefits of my medical research in the area of nutrition, gluten and other food sensitivity, and inflammatory bowel disease, particularly microscopic colitis, a disease ignored by other public service organizations dealing with colitis, are made available directly to the people that need it most: those suffering from or potentially at risk for these disorders. Because many people and physicians are not aware of the genetic and environmental risk factors for these problems, and for the higher than expected prevalence, education and public service are at the core of our mission. That is indeed an interesting topic. The lecture is two weeks from today. Hmmmmm. I'd like to hear that, but as they say, it's a fur piece to Arizona. I'll have to see how my work schedule looks, as the time gets closer.

Maybe you (and Luce) can get to the spring lecture in Dallas. That's a lot closer, and it's a whole weekend of activities. I imagine the talk will be similar.

Hi Polly. I won't be at the seminars, but after they are over maybe you could ask Dr. Fine to post one or both of the transcripts to his web site. And wouldn't it be great if Wayne and Luce could represent all of us at the one in Dallas?

Thank you for the update on Dr. Fine’s lectures.

I would also be interested in if he is planning to make recordings or transcripts available. I have read transcripts of his lectures but I believe that transcripts of the question and answer sessions would be of equal interest if made available.

Would absolutely love to go, especially to Phoenix. My grandfather is out there. However, too far of a drive for me and I have a terrible fear of flying (bad past experiences).

Dallas seems more ideal, except that by that time, we'll be in North Carolina. So that is not an option from there.

I hope all that can go have a great time and tell me all about it.'

Thanks, Polly, maybe I'll be ready for another respite by spring, and also, assuming Mom is about like she is now, perhaps my sister and bil could come along, and that way, sis would at least have a chance to meet Dr. Fine if the session with the lecture and Q&A didn't get too long for Mom to tolerate. We could leave her with the bil, but he wouldn't be able to handle the toileting situation, sooo..
I would also like for my good buddy in Ft. Worth to attend since we'd be a fairly short drive away.

Did he say whether there would be any continuing education credits available? Perhaps offering those would boost the spread of the information and interest among professionals. If he's doing this at hospitals, they usually can offer CNE's a little easier than an individual can. He could just get someone in nursing ed to help with the paperwork. I think the other professions have a little easier way to get the credits approve than nursing if they try to do it outside of having "institutional status."

Perhaps Dr. Fine could work on getting CME's for the docs. Other professions would probably just be dieticians, but can you think of still others that would be interested?? It's late and I'm drawing a blank.

Do professional chefs have to have continuing ed updates? Dr. Fine's organization could invite some of the culinary school teachers and students.

Also, the Restaurant Association could publicize the lectures explaining that this is one of the diseases that require customers to ask all those questions about what's in the food! Ha!

I wish I could go to the lecture on the October 19th - I would love to meet Dr. Fine in person. However, it is too far away

AAHHHH! I am the only person in the Phoenix area, and I'm leaving for England on the 15th. I can't believe it. By the way, it would have been a 15 minute drive for me to the Chandler Hospital.
