Tex,
I am waiting for your book to order 3 one for my PCP, GI, & me.
My question is I am very allergic to penicillin. Has this been a poll? I keep thinking something has set off my system. I have not had penicillin since I was a child. I know the diet has helped me heal and I was hoping short term but I think it will be long term.
It aggravates me that I do not know why this happen.
Thanks,
Denise

Hi Denise,
No, we haven't had a poll on penicillin, but it is notorious for being the most common drug allergy. Some people who are sensitive to penicillin also react to penicillin derivatives (such as amoxicillin) and antibiotics such as some of the older cephalosporins and carbapenems which have some of the structural characteristics of penicillin.
Many members of this forum can trace the origin of their MC to the use of an antibiotic (especially those named, but virtually any other antibiotic can cause the disease as well). Other drugs that can cause MC include PPIs, SSRIs, SNRIs, bisphosphonates, statins, ace inhibitors and calcium channel blockers.
Any bacterial or viral infection that can cause enteritis can cause MC, and some parasites can cause it. Even stressful events such as stopping a long-term smoking habit can trigger the disease. In the book, I discuss the details of what I consider to be the chain of events that leads up to the disease.
You're most welcome,
Tex

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thanks Tex
I was sick all the time as a child until I had my tonsils removed at age 6. Since then I never really get sick maybe a cold every few years. My son is also allergic to Penicillin at the age of 8 he was sent by the doctor immediately to the hospital. He was cover with a rash and had a very low white blood cell count. I hope he does not end up with MC. Since he was a baby dairy products bother him and he stays away from dairy except for the pizza & ice cream once in a while.

I am not allergic to penicillin, but my mother is, and my younger daughter is. Interestingly, I'm allergic to sulfa, which my mother also is, but none of my kids is. I haven't made a connection between antibiotics and MC, but I definitely think Zoloft was a factor in my developing it.
