Failure to read labels :(

Post by Deb »

I periodically test recipes for American Test Kitchens (Cook's Illustrated). Unfortunately, since MC, that's been pretty hard to do. I got one the other day for General Tso's chicken that looked workable, though I had to make my own gluten free hoisin sauce. This was a reduced calorie version that rolled the chicken in egg white and crumbled corn flakes, which I'd gotten at Trader Joe's. I didn't look and didn't know that their corn flakes had barley malt extract! Fortunately I just got a stomach ache but no D. My grands eat their Gorilla Munch, which is just corn......I just assumed! :(

After all of these years I have found that I still read the labels since they sometimes change and the manufacturer goes with a new ingredient that is not gluten free. Glad it was only a stomach ache and not a full-blow flare.

Love, Maggie

I am part of a survey organization that pays real money for completing surveys, it's not a scam like most of the survey companies. Anyway, I am sort of a one-woman advocate for gluten-free stuff. I get surveys where major manufacturers are wanting to roll out new products, and if they contain gluten I tell them that I am medically diagnosed gluten intolerant and therefore would not buy the product. Occasionally we get samples to try, and it's a good thing that they let the families eat them, too, because of the seemingly ever-present soy factor.
