Colonic hormones involved in MC?

Post by Zizzle »

This is brand new research, and I have no idea what it implies, but it is new information about the possible pathophysiology of LC. Endocrine hormones in the colon?

OK, so this info isn't so new. A study published in 2011 had similar findings. But what does this mean? Why is Chromogranin A, a substance commonly measured in blood for cancer diagnosis, involved in LC??

Could we have too much serotonin in our gut, as theorized by IBS-D researchers? Has anyone here had success with Lotronex?

Hmm, this is interesting--I wonder if there is any correlation to SSRI use?

Cynthia,
I think you're on to something. Treatments aimed at reducing diarrhea use serotonin inhibitors, whereas more serotonin is needed to treat constipation. If you are treating depression by increasing serotonin levels with SSRIs, it's logical diarrhea would be the eventual outcome.

It has long been my theory that my prolonged use of Zoloft was the catalyst for my (non) MC. Although I had occasional GI problems from my teens, after i started taking Zoloft they became progressively more frequent. By the time I broke down and went for a colonoscopy, I was waking up every day wondering, "Will I have D today? Will I be able to keep my client appointments? Should I eat this morning?" Going GF/DF/SF started me in the right direction, but I didn't see significant improvement until I stopped the Zoloft. Unfortunately, the damage has been done, apparently.
