What is happening?

No matter how much stool softener and/or laxative I take I cannot have a BM. it's been a week.

I have tried adding "forbidden" foods to get a reaction, but NOTHING except horrible bloating.
I wondered if the "forbidden" stuff, instead of causing D is causing C, but I don't get anything other than bloating, no gurgles, NOTHING else.
Any ideas?

You might want to talk to your doctor. I don't really know anything about it, but I wonder if you might be getting impacted.

Lesley,

I think I would be ready to head to the ER if it had been a week. Call your doctor. If it had just been 3-5 days, you might want to try OTC things, but at this point, CALL YOUR DOCTOR! He/she needs to know what is going on. Keep us updated.

Today I finally managed to get some out. Not enough, but it's a start.

Mary Beth - yes, when it gets like this I take and use EVERYTHING.

Marion - I once went 3 weeks and felt like it was coming out of my mouth. I did go to the ER, but there was nothing they could do. They told me to go home and take everything I could lay my hands on.

It amazes me how much I have to take before I can get it going. I still don't get D. Just soft serve, basically thin and floaty. I even wash it all down with prune juice in which I dissolve Miralax!

I honestly don't know what is going on, whether something I ate is making me more constipated or not. I know I am absorbing food, but I still exhaust so easily. And I am super bloated. The reaction is so different from getting D because then you know it's a reaction and you can track it down.
With C it's so difficult to know what's doing what, if you see what I mean.

Divide your body weight (in pounds) in half. The resulting number is the amount in fluid ounces you should drink each day to maintain a minimum level of hydration. You need more if you exercise, if the weather is hot, if you take daily medications, or anytime you experience a significant amount of fluid loss. If you wait until you're thirsty before drinking, your body is already low on fluid by then.

Drinking enough water is not likely to cure your C problems (because you have other issues), but it can certainly help to reduce the severity of the problem.

I drink as much as I can without, hopefully, decreasing my sodium levels. Sometimes, I think, the exhaustion is because I drank too much and my sodium has dropped below 130.

There are conflicting opinions about the "thirsty=dehydration" theory. My brother, the physiologist, ascribed to it for many years. Now he is a bit doubtful. He thinks 4 glasses of water are enough as long as you are getting fluid through produce, it's not too hot and humid causing excess perspiration, and you aren't engaging in sport, especially in the sun. The way you tell is through your electrolytes, so he recommends blood tests every 6 months, and more, if like me, you have a problem, and/or you are experiencing symptoms (different for each electrolyte). I had very low potassium for a while, then it went way up, so it had to be managed, mostly by "free" water intake.

There are some bench/stool kind of things on the internet that will retrofit our Western seat style toilets into the Asian/Italian/French squat style toilets. The thought is that the squat position helps with constipation. I've tried the "perch on the toilet rim" position that one of the posters talks about in below link. Since I got off of Entocort and am eating paleo--ish I trend towards constipation. I'm taking a magnesium tablet daily to help things along but I'm scared to take anything else after 4 mths WD. Implementing the squat position has turned my constipation into a non issue, i.e. everything slides out easily with no straining. I would not recommend the "perch on the toilet rim" position to anyone unless they are fairly fit and agile. We don't need any potty people with broken limbs from falling off the toilet seat.

I believe that there are a number of these gizmos available on the internet. I don't think they will work miracles but I know for me assuming the squat position has turned constipation into a non issue.

That would be a great idea if I could squat. I have NEVER been able to get anywhere near squatting because of problems after my polio. I DO put a stool under my feet and go as low as I can, but it's not much of a squat.
I am forever grateful to the person who invented toilet seat covers because I can't not sit when going to a toilet, so I use 2-3 on the seat AFTER using a wet wipe to clean.

I am glad you found such a good solution for your C.
