building stamina- Leah, need your opinion

Post by carolm »

Leah, as a fitness trainer I would appreciate your opinion on this. I read an article yesterday that said the best way to build stamina was to do short sessions of intense exercise, even if it was 3 10-minute sessions, spread out during the day. What are your thoughts about this idea?
Also I was guessing a combination of resistance training and cardio would be best. What would you suggest?

thanks, Carol

Hi Carol. It depend on what you call stamina. Short bursts of high intensity cardio ( mixed with moderate intensity) is great for your heart and boosts metabolism. BUT if you are looking to be able to go long periods of time without getting tired, then moderate cardio spread out through a 30 minute or more time frame is better. Think of it this way : who has better stamina _ a marathon runner or a sprinter? With my clients, I try to mix it up so that they get both power and endurance. One type one day. The other the next.
When it comes to resistance training, I recommend at three times a week. You can either mix it up with your cardio or do it on days that you don't do cardio. Just remember not to work a sore muscle group. Let it mend in between sessions. Does that answer your question?

Getting ready to go on a camping trip. I will be back Monday.
