L-Glutamine

Post by kgardner »

Hello all,

I have been GF for about two weeks and things have remained the same since I stopped taking entocort 6 weeks ago. No D just frequent rumbling. I will continue with the GF diet in hopes that my gut becomes normal.

A couple of questions:

What is the new normal? Do you all have flare-ups and if so what do you do? Does diet alone prevent flare-ups? I'm interested in what my future holds and what I should expect. I would guess that answers will vary. Any information would be helpful and I spend a good deal of time worrying about another flare.

Also, I consistently see references to L-Glutamine as a possible aid to MC. What are your thoughts? Have any of you given this a try?

Thank You,
kristi

Hi Kristi,
I am taking L-Glutamine at bedtime, and it seems to help. When I have a flare (usually caused by accidental gluten contamination), taking a Pepto Bismol tabs seems to calm things down for me. A flare usually lasts 2 days, but I'm in a low-level persistent flare now.

Hi Kristi. I also take two tsp. of L-Glutamine powder a day. It is suppose to help heal the intestine lining. I also get little flares. Although I am still "testing" foods. My flares usually consist of a couple loose BMs in the morning and then I am fine. They are lasting anywhere from 1-7 days. The rumbling could be from something else you are eating that is just a little too hard for your inflamed gut to handle ( like salad, fruit, nuts, dairy....etc). Everyone is different.

Hi Kristi,
I retained remission a couple of years ago fairly quickly and usually the only issues I would have would be if I got unintentionally glutened. Things would usually return to normal in a day or two. However, I had an intestinal bug a couple of months ago which must have triggered my MC again (DH had it too but he got better after a week). I had a full-scale flare again which took nearly a month to get through. It kind of surprised me....I naively thought I was past that!

Kristi, I also had those rumbles while I was GF and DF until I dropped soy and that put an end to those. It apparently was an additive in some things I was eating and as it turns out, a REAL problem for me according to my Enterolab results. I also would have an occasional mini-flare, lasting a day or so, but they resolved as long as I went back to my basic diet and made sure I was getting enough rest. Sometimes it wasn't even a whole day, just a 'rough morning'.

Since I've received my MRT results and dropped foods that were problematic and added (after testing) foods that weren't causing histamine reactions, my gut is calm. I have not tried L-Glutamine but it seems others are having positive results.

Things do get better buts it's a slow process.

Homemade bone broths are supposed to be a significant source of glutamine. I have a cup daily. No way to really tell if it helps but I figure bone broth has got to be good for you.

HI Kristi,

I'm 5.5 months off of Entocort.

Re: flareups I've been to 4 restaurants since I got off of Entocort. Three of the 4 times were not good experiences even though I followed our GF,DF,SF regimen. I think I either got gluttened or soyed. No WD but 2-3 hours of nausea the next morning followed by headache of 1-3 days. I'm trying to stay out of restaurants for awhile until I'm better healed.

WD flareup--I've had 1 of these at week 14 off of Ento. It was NOT tied out to diet as my diet doesn't change a lot. It was strictly caused by an extremely stressful family situation that you would encounter once every 25 years. I managed to handle it w/ chicken broth, pepto bismol, and my meditation tapes. By day 4 I was back to my normal. I was proud of my self for managing it without taking Entocort. Since the flare I put an emergency supply of chicken soup in my freezer and put some backup clothes in my car as well as a roll of TP.

L Glutamine--I'm on my 3rd big container of it. I've never stopped taking it since Connie originally posted about it. It's not hurting me but I can't clearly say it is helping. I think it helps me get more water in as I mix 1 heaping tsp in a tall glass of water 3x per day.

Re: Rumbling--I had this daily all day long until about a week ago. Now I have a little less rumbling but still daily rumbling.

Going forward---I'm working on stress reduction which seems like an on going battle. I find I do best staying in my regular food routine and I try to take snacks when I'm out and about so that I don't get too hungry.

Carol is right, things get better with time but for me it has all taken awhile. Hope this helps, regards, Brandy
