I'm not sure whether or not you can be tested for it, it took her a while to put it together because she couldn't find a common thread between alcohol, aspirin, tea, etc, but once she figured it out she just eliminated the salicylates and feels a lot better now. She can still have small quantities of most things without getting sick, and she only gets the hives from aspirin, alcohol, and mint most of the time. She was fine her whole life but developed this in the past year. Here's a good website of the food list, it tells you what is low and high.

Deb, you should be able to get enough B12 from tablets or drinks, sublingual is a more absorbable form. I have to get the shots because I have pernicious anemia and can't absorb the B12 in my stomach, but for everyone else it should be fine.
My daughter suspects Celiac

Amber - thanks for the info. on B12 shots.
Marliss - those do sound interesting. Unfortunately, I'm highly reactive to caffeine. Thanks for the suggestion - years ago, I used to drink and enjoy Tang.

Kari
P.S. Today I discovered that I have developed an intolerance to my home made almond milk, so now I'm down to water in the drink department .

What a bummer. Even plain, unsweetened decaffeinated tea is out? Have you ever tried Virgil's Root Beer? Those were the only options I had (besides water) when I was recovering, except that regular black tea (with caffeine) was fine. Back then all the almond milk that I could find contained soy, and it never dawned on me to try to make my own.Kari wrote:P.S. It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tex,
I try to look at this way: there are 3 types of water I can have - room temperature - cold - and when I really want to party - with ice . A couple of weeks ago I was ecstatic when I thought I did well with diet ginger ale - it tasted like the most refreshing, satisfying drink I had ever had in my life. So naturally, I quickly developed an intolerance :(. One of these days things WILL get better!!! Can you tell I'm having a rough day???
Thanks for the drink suggestions - I have tried various decaffeinated teas with no luck - even camomile does not work for me. The trouble is that buying things to try gets expensive. Like for many others here, my cabinets are filled with things that did not work - I probably have 5 types of probiotics, several kinds of vitamin D, B12 and folic acid, a recent "protein powder" mix, etc., etc.
The root beer sounds fabulous - perhaps I'll give it a try - at least, I won't be out more than a buck or two if it doesn't work :).
Love,
Kari

Well-stated, Kari. You and I could do a toast with our water. I've been drinking only water for so long that I don't miss other drinks. I find it refreshing and, most importantly, safe.Kari wrote:I try to look at this way: there are 3 types of water I can have - room temperature - cold - and when I really want to party - with ice.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
