The times, they are a-changing!

Post by Polly »

Hi All,

I wanted to share something interesting. I was walking on a nearby trail, when I was approached by a young man who was giving away free coupons to a nearby frozen soy yogurt store. I declined the offer, saying that I cannot tolerate soy. He was frustrated and proceeded to say that a number of other people had also refused, citing the same reason I did. Food sensitivities are increasing, it seems. We MCers are no longer so alone with our food issues. The world is catching on...........

Love,

Polly

Soy especially. I am hearing more and more about soy sensitivities.

So true. More and more people are connecting symptoms to the foods they eat, and the symptoms are not always GI. Soy is one of the top 8 allergens in the US, and that doesn't account for those with sensitivity to soy. My business partner just had MRT and she had high reactivity to soy lecithin. She was surprised by this and was shocked by how many of her fave foods had soy in them. A few years ago her mother developed a uterine fibroid. She was in her 50s and this was considered unusual. This woman thought soy was good for her (because of very good marketing no doubt) and was practically mainlining it. Her doctor said the added phytoestrogens caused the fibroids to develop. I found this interesting because back when I was a vegetarian and eating lots of soy I also developed fibroids, but at the time no one made a conneciton with diet.

When I first was diagnosed I'd never heard of MC or known anyone who had it but now that I am paying attention I'm hearing more and more stories from young people in their 20's and 30's (I work at a College) who are experiencing different forms of IBS. Could it be our world is dangerously polluted?
When I first tried to eat gluten-free, I was unknowingly using lots soy products such as tofu as meat substitutes and kept experiencing bad cramping. Now, instead of being 'semi-vegetarian' I am very carnivorous which befuddles my daughter & son-in-law as they are strict vegetarians. They have a lovely garden and have been supplying me with organic spaghetti squash, green beans, and garlic. Right now, I stick to a few basic, "safe" foods and I rotate these as much as I can. I won't know if this is working until I roll off my Entocort the end of July. I have to confess I hate to roll off it as I feel good on it and I find eating a MC diet taxing on my energy and draining on my pocket book.

I really think it has a lot to do with the bio-engineering of all these foods... frustrating. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the numbers in the US verses Europe ( since they have so little bio foods) ?

So do the fibroids go away after soy is removed from the diet? Five years ago when I was first diagnosed with MC, I was told I had uterine fibroids. Nothing more has been said so I didn't think much of it. I too, was eating a lot of soy products thinking I was doing something good.

I know they can shrink as hormones change, but I don't know if they go away. I had a fibroid the size of an orange and took a medication to shrink it. It inhibited estrogen and threw me into instant, but temporary, menopause. It didn't even shrink it 1/4 of an inch so I am doubtful that simply cutting out soy would get rid fo them.

Are they anything to be concerned about if I'm not having any problems?

Are they growing? If they are getting larger I guess it could be a problem. My fibroid was inside my uterus (the size of an orange), not on the surface and this was before I had children. I dodn't know I had it until I went for my annual checkup. I had surgery to remove it but preserve my uterus.

In all the appointments I've had, nothing has ever been said. I guess if I start to have problems I 'll make an appointment.
