*****about B vitamins

Post by Marsha »

Wait till you see what I read about B vitamins and sulfites!!!!!

Remember all the discussion about why they make so many of us sick!!

Mystery solved! I feel like a prizefighter who just KO'd somebody.

This is a huge puzzle solved - wine, shredded coconut, fruit juices, sulfa drugs, sugars, corn syrup, souerkrout, maple syrup, cherry pie filling, yellow #5, B vitamins: all things that I couldn't eat, for NO apparent reason.

Remember how I told you I got so much better after I started B12? One of the few ways you can protect yourself from sulfites is by taking B12 because it boosts your own protective sulfite oxidase.

Oh man, I need to sit down. I am sitting down. I better run around for a while.

Confused. You said you couldn't take B vitamins, but when you take B12 you felt better? Isn't B12 a B vitamin or am I confusing them because they both have a B in them?

Hi Marsha. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but when I stopped taking meds I also began taking vitamin B-12. For whatever reason, my diarrhea went away! And I felt much better. What brand of B-12 do you take and in what doseage? Also can you please post the link to where you read the article? Thanks!

Love, Carrie

Dear Clueless Sibling,

You're not clueless, I just wasn't clear, sorry. The B vitamins that are problematic and contain sulfur are thiamin (B1) and Biotin (B7). Especially biotin, which is said in my reading to be a incredibly strong sulfite. Taurine, as well, providing more sulfur oxide than a glass of wine. MSM also is bad also, for people sensitive to sulfites.
So the problem is the multivitamins that have those things in them, which is what I've found.

What's weird is that I actually asked my doctor to switch me to a a thyroid pill that didn't contain yellow dye #5 about 2 years ago, I was so sure the dye was making me sick. Then I kept having problems, at least it didn't cure me. But I wasn't imagining it!!! There's nothing like proof that you're not a hypochondriac to make your day . . . .

Wa-Hooo, I'm still celebrating Love, Marsha :bashful:

  Yeah, that's always nice.

So B12 helps fight against the sulfite, or you just noticed it didn't make you feel bad?

Dear Mike,

Darn it, I just wrote you a note and kicked myself off. Now I'm doing it again.

Taking B12 gave me a lot more energy, less body aches and Norman moved in for about 3-4 weeks until I got a sinus infection and I took antibiotics. So I had D for about a week, then back to Norman (although not quite as good as before the antibiotics. Then 3 weeks ago I had an allergic reaction to the plastic temporary crowns my doctor put in (and maybe even to the novacaine, which is a sulfa derivative) and got really bad D - almost the worst ever. But I got the plastic out, and the permanent ones glued in on Tuesday, so today I feel better finally.

B12 is supposed to support your own defenses to sulphur, as does (weird) dried peas -- don't know why, I'm still learning.

But, here are some links. This may not apply to you, or even to me; I haven't tested it by eating anything on purpose. But I'm 100% convinced that sulfites give me headaches, sinus problems, and D because of the inflammation they cause. The first link is the one that talks about vitamins:

I REALLY hope this is of some help to someone. Love, Marsha :bashful:

WOW Marsha!!

I have always known that too much wine would give me migraine and sometimes a red, itchy rash (looks like a sunburn). This doesn't happen every time, so I didn't connect the two. I thought the sulfites in the wine were the problem, but I didn't think about the rash as being part of it. I thought the rash was nerves.

This last weekend on my birthday, I sat out in the sun for awhile, had a glass of white wine and then at dinner I had shrimp and more white wine.
In the morning I had a red, itchy rash on my chest. Just a v shape and then a strip accross my midriff. I first thought that it was sunburn, but I wasn't wearing a shirt cut that low or showing my mid-waist. I thought that the sun must have come through the white cotten top I was wearing.

NOW, I believe it was a reaction to too many sulfites!! I don't always react to those two things, so it is hard to resist them. I definitely will be aware now!! That was Monday, and I am still itching from it on Friday. I have taken benedryl several times also. Very interesting, I will keep an eye on those sulfites from now on.

Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention!! NO SULFA drugs for me!

Love KathyP
