glutened and soyed myself
You try to be so careful, then you go and do something dumb. Last Saturday I was making chicken stir-fry, using all ingredients that I have used before with no problem. I reached into the cupboard for my bottle of fish sauce and poured it in. As soon as I did that, I realized that the smell was wrong, and I had poured in soy sauce.
I shrieked dementedly, grabbed a bowl and scooped out the side of the food where I had poured the soy sauce. Then I got another spatula, and moved the "uncontaminated" side of the food to another skillet, where I put the fish sauce on it. I let DH eat the soy sauce stir-fry, and I ate the stuff I had "saved". I was also pretty peeved at him for putting soy sauce at the front of the cupboard where I could grab it accidentally. (I knew that was irrational, and it was totally my own fault for not looking at the bottle, but I was still mad.)
Bad idea to eat it. I had four days of WD, and the third day I was real tired and achy, which is how I tend to react to soy. So I could see both a gluten reaction and a soy reaction.
The lesson from all this? One, I really do react to these things, and two, any little bit of contamination contaminates the whole batch, even if you don't stir it in. Sigh. And three, look at bottles before you pour.
I'm better now, but I used Imodium almost every day this week.

Wow Martha - sorry that happened to you, but it's a strong reminder of how little it takes to react. I'm having a difficult time with my SO, who shares my kitchen. Even though he is for the most part patient and understanding, I can sense him rolling his eyes behind my back when I keep reminding him of what not to do. I think it's very difficult for someone who does not have MC to really understand how little it takes for us to get a reaction. Thanks for posting this, I just read it to my SO, as it adds credibility to what I keep harping on :).

Martha,
Sometimes we do absent minded things and pay a price. I remember being at an Asian restaurant and taking great care to make sure my meal was GF, and then popped a fortune cookie in my mouth. I quickly removed it but it was too late. The familiar aches and D came with a vengeance the next morning. I think we have all been there. Hope you are feeling better.

Oh Martha,
Bummer! All I can say is that we've all been there, done that, despite our best efforts. You have plenty of company! Glad you are better. It never ceases to amaze me how such a small exposure can set a flare in motion that lasts for days, and sometimes even longer.
Hugs,
Polly

Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused.
Know the feeling- the one restaurant I can trust served my baked cod with rye bread sitting nicely on top of it this weekend. I wanted to cry because I didn't want to make a fuss since they're always so accomodating. I felt the eye roll from my husband but it is a big deal and I was the only person in the whole establishment who understands it. It was an error and I ate it anyway because I felt stuck- either go hungry and make everyone else feel uncomfortable while I sit there and refuse to eat or take my chances. I didn't have a horrible experience but I did notice a more run-down feeling than normal. It's frustrating when others don't realize that a few bites of the wrong food can ruin things for days.
I just got back from taking my son on a college campus tour about 2 hours away from home. I opted to just not eat lunch because they wanted to run through Burger King to be quick. I should have packed something just in case but didn't. It gets to be a toss up because I feel just as run down now because I hadn't eaten all day. Live & learn.
