UTI *sigh*

Post by Lesley »

I have one, so I will have to do urine tests - cultures to see what antibiotics will work.
Once I am having urine tests any and all blood tests come under the same $25 "cover charge", so I want to ask my doc for everything.
Trouble is I have to make it clear what I want done. Otherwise my doc does the very basics.
Please suggest a list of the tests I should ask for.

I feel for you Lesley, after having just gone through this. I don't think I would be able to wait for a culture before I got an antibiotic. Too much pain.

I'm not sure what blood work you should order; I'm sure others will have some ideas.

I will say that since my UTI has resolved, I'm seeing Normans again.

It could be the 1/2 t. D-mannose, the 2 oz. of cranberry juice, or that I'm getting over the gluten reaction from the contaminated corn flour. Whatever it is, I'm happy.

Gloria,
Glad to see you got over the UTI and are tolerating the d-mannose. That's great news.

Lesley,
I don't know of any bloodwork that is done in relation to UTIs. I hope it gets better quickly!

D-mannose does the trick for me too - in a day. Does d-mannose not agree with you, Lesley?

The only tests I know of for UTIs are urinalysis by cystocentesis if you don't want contaminated urine being tested and a culture and sensitivity test to figure out what antibiotic your UTI is responsive to. I know this b/c our cats and dogs have this done routinely. They get better testing than we do.

I had no idea that a test existed to determine which antibiotic will work best against an individual's UTI. I certainly could have used that a couple of weeks ago.

Lesley,

Are you thinking of additional non-UTI related blood tests? If so, here are the ones I've been asking for lately:

CBC (picks up extra white blood cells outside your intestines)
Complete Metabolic Panel (checks blood levels of things like sodium, potassium, glucose, and calcium)
Vitamin D (the 25-hydroxy version of the test)
B-12
Thyroid (but I have an extensive family history of thyroid disease, so I get that one every 6 months anyway)
ANA (can point out how significant your inflammation level is and whether you have additional autoimmune issues developing)
Sed rate

Lots of people also get C-reactive protein (CRP); I haven't had them do that one yet.

Best wishes!

Thanks guys!

I was thinking of any and all the possible blood tests I could ask for. It's the same fee. My doc asked for a lot, and the results are beginning to come in. Sodium and chloride are low, but that's pretty normal for me. They are not as low as they have been in the past.

Gloria - I have had SO many UTIs - I always wait for the culture results to come back before I take antibiotics because there have been times when the one I was taking wasn't the one I needed, and I had been taking them unnecessarily. I'd rather feel lousy a few more days than take the wrong one and feel worse.

My ANA has been on the high side of normal for years. I have had a few lupus like attacks, and often have a malar rash, though the docs say it's not lupus. I'm used to it.

I am waiting for the vitamin results to come in.

I need to go to my OBGYN. I stopped taking HRT as advised by Polly because it causes D, and I need to find out if things are OK down there. I might have to use an estrogen ring again, something I hate to do when D is in the picture. Any extra messing around can set it off again.
