More evidence that GI infections trigger celiac disease

Post by Zizzle »

This time from the military. Interestingly, viral gastroenteritis was more commonly associated with celiac than bacterial. I wonder if the vaccines the armed forces receive might be a confounding factor.

I'll have to read that article, but I read a medical journal once that said the gliadin molecule is present in the rotovirus, or maybe it was another common cold I can't remember, but it was the gliadin present in the virus! Crazy!

Susie,

You're quite correct. Research done 25 years ago discovered a connection. Actually, the peptides may not be identical, but they are so close that molecular mimicry may be the mechanism by which they are connected.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Wow, that's fascinating. Makes me wonder whether rotavirus vaccine could be responsible for new cases of CD in kids -- via molecular mimicry. I opted out of the rotaviris vaccine for my kids, and I don't think either kid has ever had the virus.

 Interesting thought. I suppose it's possible.
