another heart ?
So a few weeks back I was having heart pains, shooting pains that would last a few seconds and then suddenly go away. I went to my GI and he wanted to have it cked to be on the safe side (well I sort of insisted...) Anyways, they taped me up to some machine listened to my heart for like 30 seconds and sent me on my way. Everything sounded/was fine. And to be honest, ever since then, I haven't had another 'episode'.
Well, last night after I took my liquid benedryl and laid down to bed, I felt my heart beat really fast for a few seconds and then slow down again. Then sped up and slow down. This happened about 2 times and made me a bit nervous. Has anyone had this or know what it is/means?
Thanks!
Jenny

Hi Jenny,
If your doc gave you a clean bill of health you should be OK and maybe it was just a reaction to the benedryl. I have a heart thaqt is not very cooperative but due to an enlarged left lower chamber and it causes the blood to pump more than twice as fast as a normal heart so I have the speed up heart problem. Just take my meds and keep it under control.
If it presents again, please go to a cardiologist to have it checked out.
Love, Maggie

Hi Jenny,
There are some heart conduction problems that can cause intermittent changes in rate. They can only be diagnosed by wearing the equipment that can track the heart activity over a 24 hour period. Your problem may very well be nothing, but if this continues, I would let your doc know. It might be a good idea to keep a record of these episodes, if you aren't already. Don't be alarmed - conduction problems are easily treated if that should be the case.
Hugs,
Polly

Jenny,
I had the little machine Polly is talking about once. It takes 24 hours and is super-easy to manage and not at all intrusive. It's probably worth your trouble if you're having palpitations like that more than once in a while.

P.S. In my case they didn't find anything unusual, but it made me feel better to know that. :)

Jenny,
I experienced lots of cardiac symptoms with my mast cell issues. I had tachycardia frequently, and yes children's liquid benedryl triggered it once (flavoring most likely). I also had the heart pain you described on a few occasionsn and went to the ER. I had EKGs, echo, cardiac stress test and wore a monitor for a week - all was normal.
The other cardiac issue I had was called hyperadrenergic POTS and it is seen in conjunction with mast cell activation. It caused my BP to spike, along with tachycardia and dizziness.
If it persists then you should absolutely see a cardiologist.

Jenny,
Like Mary Beth, I've had cardiac symptoms, too. I've gone to ER, seen a cardiologist, done stress tests, etc., and my heart was fine. Once I began eating a low-histamine diet, the sporadic and infrequent heart pains went away. I haven't had a problem for about 2 1/2 years.
