CG Entocort which is the brand name for that med is the standard for MC and several other IBDs and works quite well for MC. It takes a week or so to see the effects kick in and usually you need to remain on it for a good 3 months or more to see the best long term benefit
It is a steroid, but it stays mostly in the GI tract and does not for the most part affect other parts of the body making it a much safer steroid than something like prednisone.
Most of us respond to it quite well if we take it long enough and that we taper off it slowly. It seems that we need a minimal course of about 3 months or longer to settle things down and a slow taper, working the dosage down over a period of a month or so. Everyone responds a bit differently.
The only main side effect that I have heard of here is neurological in nature. It seems like a small percentage can have some sleep disturbances and possibly other odd aches and pains due to the med; this is a rare exception, most of us tolerate it quite well.
The typical dosage is 9mg per day, taken in the morning.
Thanks for letting us know.

It is the one I use and it was a life saver. Joe just about covered how safe it is and how it should be used. I will say that if you don't make the dietary changes nesessary, you will probably not be able to taper down. I started 5 months ago with a full dose. Changed my diet and was able to slowly drop down to 6mg. within the two months ( getting slightly constipated tells you when to start tapering). Now I am taking 3 mg. every OTHER day and am almost ready to go down to taking 3 mg. one day and skipping 2 days. I had a couple of mini flares ( because of something I ate) during the past 5 months and had to up the dose temporarily, but was able to taper down fairly quickly.
I hope it works well for you

THank you so much Joe & Leah, I took my first does this morning, 3 a day to start. Then it does taper off eventually. And no refills, so would that mean that after taking the entire RX, that it clears things up completely? And, I hope all is going good for you two also!
Hi Cindy. Unfortunately one dose of what, three months? ( you didn't say).... is not enough. Everyone is different in how fast they can taper down and eventually stop. Some of us on this forum are on a low dose indefinitely. I don't know where I will fall yet, but I just started taking one pill every three days ( skipping 2) and I am five months into the process. You might want to talk to your doctor about not having any refills. My doc originally thought I would only need three months, but these doctors just don't understand this disease very well. Once he saw that I was doing everything in my power to not take many, he agreed to refill as much as I needed. If you have trouble getting more, there is a way to order some on line from other countries.
Let us know how it is going.

Well, that's everyone's dream, but unfortunately, Entocort only suppresses your symptoms; it doesn't cure MC. Once you stop taking it, your symptoms will likely return, unless you make changes to your diet and/or eliminate any medications which are associated with causing MC.Cindy wrote:And no refills, so would that mean that after taking the entire RX, that it clears things up completely?
I agree with Leah - it's best to taper the dosage very slowly, as she is doing. Most here have needed to take it for at least 6 months.
I wish you well and hope you will find quick relief using Entocort.
Gloria
You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Hi Cincy,
Yes, Gloria is right. I was on Entocort 4.5 months. Most users on this forum find it is best to stay on 4.5 months to 6 months and closer to 6 months probably better. It is better to have a long slow taper at the low end. Less than 3 months has a high incidence of relapse but it is what most GI docs seem to prescribe.
