Pain or urgent D, or both
I'm curious as to what others with MC experience during their flare ups and their bad days..... is it the frequent, urgent, explosive sprints to the bathroom or is it doubling-over pain (but not so much sprinting), or both?
When I went through many months of suffering years ago before I was diagnosed there was not so much pain, per se, but I couldn't eat anything unless I was within 10 feet of a restroom. This went on many times a day, including the middle of the night (yes, I have slept in the bathroom). I would occasionally have gassy, stomach pains but they were immediately following by the urgent D and then the pain was gone, for a while.
When I started my flare up a few months ago, pretty much the same thing. A little pain letting me know it was time to drop what I was doing and start to run for the bathroom, but immediately relieved once I got there.
Now that I am on no meds (stopped the Asacol last Wednesday and have Entocort on hand but haven't started taking it yet) I am in SEVERE pain but without the need to run to the bathroom. I believe it's gas because it even extends to my back and shoulders and I'm finding it difficult to walk. This has been the case on and off for the past couple of days so I guess what the Asascol was doing for me was causing D but alleviating some of the pain?
I was going to wait a little longer before starting the Entocort because I really want to see what my system does with NO drugs in it, but if this continues much longer I may have to break down and say "it's time".
Curious as to what others experience with certain drugs, with no drugs, etc. Are your flare-up symptoms predictable or do they vary?

Diagnosed November 2004, Used Asacol and Lialda, sometimes worked, sometimes made it worse. Entocort always works but hate it. Remission only lasts 3-6 months and then back on Entocort. Enterolab test July 2017, now gluten free. Time will tell!

Hi Sue,
I suspect that you are correct about the Asacol causing D while alleviating pain (it's very closely related to NSAIDs). For me, whenever I was reacting, both issues were the order of the day. I never took any meds, and sometimes the pain was so bad that it kept me awake at night, and caused me to double over during the day.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Sue,
Even on the Entocort, I can have bad days. When I get the abdominal pain, it can last for about 6 hours. Sometimes I wish that it could be alleviated by a trip to the bathroom. Mine just goes on and on, and the best thing for me to do is to lie down (which I obviously can't do until I get home from work). I think all of the episodes were food related. My GI doc thinks those episodes are spasms and he has given me yet another med for those. In the office I just placed both hands on my stomach, and said that the pain can come on within an hour of eating, and it just doesn't go away.
My urgent trips to the bathroom used to be between 4 and 6 am. Not so much now that I have been on the Entocort. Not so much urgency anymore. Two weeks left and the doc wants me off of that so I'll have to play it a day at a time. To this day, my dear husband still checks with me before he ties up the bathroom taking his shower. He is very understanding of my problem.
Lately my Entocort doesn't seem to be working all that well. I'm only a fraction away from watery. That's when the "wake up out of a sound sleep and rush to the bathroom" trips occur. I just discovered that the multi vitamin that I have been taking for about three weeks has soy in it. That might be the main culprit. I just discovered that today as I went over everything trying to figure out why I was going downhill.
Yes, I have slept on the bathroom floor, but only on the rare occasions that I had a stomach bug that was causing both D and vomitting.
Anyway, I wish you well in a speedy recovery from all that you are going through!

Sue,
My symptoms have rarely included pain; when they have, going to the bathroom has made it go away.
When I'm in a flare, my first symptom is urgency, followed by deteriorating BMs. More frequent trips, also.
I have been on various dosages of Entocort over the years, including being off of it completely. Presently I'm taking 6 mg/day of Entocort and 1/2 Imodium a day.
I hope you're able to resolve your pain with or without meds.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Hi Marion. It's strange that even on the Entocort ( full dosage?) that you are deteriorating. It must mean that there is something you are still ingesting that is really making things bad. The vitamins are probably a good place to start. I have to say that when I was in a flare, I stopped taking ALL my supplements. Seemed to help. Since you have to go off the entocort soon, you could start experimenting with Immodium. I have never used it, but it seems to work for many here.
Good luck

Hi Sue,
Mine is both. Some days it is the urgent, explosive, run-to-the bathroom days, some days it is doubling-over pain (gas and bloating) that goes on for hours, and some days I have a combination of both. Then there are days, like today, that my belly just rumbles, and others can hear. The really urgent days usually start very early in the morning, and I often resort to Immodium after a few rounds to settle it down before I'm really worn out and in pain for the day. The Immodium is very fast and effective for me.

Thanks for the feedback, guys..... always helpful (and comforting) to hear what others experience.
As of last night I had been off my Asacol for one full week and the pain and urgency was getting out of hand so this morning I took my very first dose of Entocort. It's probably my imagination, but I almost already feel some relief. NO pain, and have only had to run to the bathroom ONCE today and it's 1:30 p.m.!!!!
It can't be working this early, can it?
