Swelling in the esophagus????

Post by Fish2575 »

So last Thursday I ate a piece of bread that I had purchased at the store. I always examine labels carefully, had one in each hand, and I guess I bought the bread I didn't mean to buy, which contained milk and cheese.

I knew I was in for it when I saw my mistake, and my usual crazy symptoms of cold sores, D, etc, were expected. What I didn't expect and don't know what to do about is the lump in my throat. It came on with the other symptoms about two days after I had the bread.

I feel pretty certain my body decided it was going to attack my esophagus now too. Other symptoms have subsided. My GI doc thinks I am a nutcase so I don't even want to tell her about it. Anyone else ever had this happen? Ideas of what to do? I was considering taking a zantac, but my tummy doesn't like it much.

Much obliged, Susie

Hmmmmm. That's kind of an unusual symptom for a food sensitivity (if it occurred 2 days after the event, then it's not an anaphylactic reaction).

The sensation of a lump in the throat is often associated with a hiatal hernia, and occasionally it's associated with GERD. You're kind of young for a hiatal hernia, though. Certain drugs have also been known to cause it (Lexapro, for example).

Otherwise, it beats the heck out of me.

I'm not on anything but entocort and lialda. Had my thyroid checked and it is fine. I have a friend with Eosinophilic Esophagitis which is caused by food intolerances. That's why I assumed the milk as the cause. Guessing I should see someone, really don't want to!

I've had a problem like that the last 2 days. No explanation - no unusual foods - but I do have a small sliding hernia, whatever that is. Thanks, Tex, I didn't know that could do it. It started while exercising yesterday. Hmmm.

Marcia,

Do you know how to encourage your stomach to slide back into place?

Drink a large glass of warm water, then stand on your tiptoes and drop hard onto your flat feet. Repeat several times, if necessary. This helps the stomach to pull the upper portion of itself that has slipped up past the opening in the diaphragm, back into it's normal position, below the diaphragm. Just be sure you're either wearing shoes with cushion soles, or standing on soft carpet when you do this so that you don't cause any joint or foot damage.

They would rather prescribe a PPI or recommend a surgeon.

A member posted about that trick several years ago. I believe she said that her chiropractor had recommended it.

You're most welcome.

And FWIW, I feel a lot better after doing it a few times! Thanks again!
