I am familiar with the SCD diet and this is a variation on the theme from what I understand. Now, has anyone in this group attempted any of these two diets? I am curious to know if they are even appropriate for people like us...Maybe Tex or Polly can help us understand them.. thanks, dear friends!

Hi Monique,

The main problem with the SCD is that most of us are sensitive to all dairy products, and the SCD allows yogurt and cheese (maybe even butter -- I don't recall). If you remove the dairy products from the SCD you have the paleo diet, which is a much better diet to start with. I'm not familiar with the GAPS diet, but here is an old discussion about it:

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Tex's post re GAPS and SCD

Post by wmonique2 »

Good morning Tex,

Thank you for your reply and the link you provided. I read it all. One thing I know for sure, neither SCD nor GAPS is for diabetics---type 2 and type 1 for sure.

It is dangerously low in carbs and will get an insulin-dependent diabetic into ketosis. Ketosis is not good for anybody but it can be deadly for a diabetic. Not to get into ketosis requires a very minimum of 30 grams of carbs a day which those diets may not provide. And like you said, for us, it is too laden with dairy and yoghourt.

So I'll pass on this one!
