Well some good news....it's not cancer!!!!

It's called a Giant cystic Schmorl's node, which if I understand correctly is basically a cyst that's formed in the bone. It seems that the soft discs in your spine that are filled with a jelly like substance can not only bulge outwards but can also bulge upwards into the bone of the vertebrae if there is a week spot. In this case this also formed the presence of a giant cell cyst. Apparently these are somewhat rare and can look like cancer on a MRI.

So now it's just a matter of dealing with the spinal stenosis and AS. They are scheduling a session to have some long acting steroids injected into those spaces in the spinal column to settle down the pain. Apparently those can give meaningful relief for several months at a time.

Certainly thanks for all of your prayers and well wishes...I am quite humbled.

Now it feels as if a 100 pound weight has been removed, what an interesting week.

Joe,

Such great news, no cancer, life is good. Hope the steroid injections help your back. I am a veteran of the back wars (although not AS) so I feel your pain.

 What did I tell ya? Second only to "IBS", cancer is their default diagnosis anytime something doesn't look right.

Drink one for me, while you're celebrating.

Wow Joe - what a scare you've had!!! I'm so very happy to hear the good news  . Lots of luck with the "repair work" - hope the procedure goes off smoothly - sending positive thoughts and prayers your way.

Love,
Kari

Joe, I am thrilled about the dx.
I hope the steroid shots help. They have helped me in the past, enough for me to wish they would give me some right now.

Have you asked your doc about a dorsal stimulator? I have been thinking of doing it, but am a little nervous, since I am so prone to everything that CAN go wrong. I wonder if it would work for AS?
