mucus

Post by jmayk8 »

Should I be concerned if I have mucus in my stool? I have been getting along fairly well with just 1 imodium every few days but, I am still seeing mucus.

It's usually a sign of intestinal inflammation.

So even though my D seems to be controlled with the Imodium, I'm obviously still eating something that I am sensitive to. Do you think I should get off the Imodium and try to find out what it may be? I put a call into my GIs office today to see what he thinks...

Jenny it does sound like your body is trying to tell you something. By stopping the Imodium you would be in a better position to figure out what food item it might be. Keep in mind that it may be a food item or simply that your sensitive to things like any raw foods (salads, fruits, nuts or even citrus juices etc.) that are more mechanically irritating. Either would result in the production of mucus.

I hope you can figure it out soon, it does sound like you are getting close to being able to maintain remission.

Morning Jenny,

More than likely something you are eating is aggravating your system and mucus is the outcome of it. Probably stopping the Immodium and sorting it out is best since you are so close to finally having remission.

Good Luck!

Love, Maggie

So I spoke with my GI this morning. He called me from his cell on his way to a meeting. He asked me about my recent vacation and is very nice.
However,
I told him I was taking the 1 imodium every few days and that was keeping me norman except for the mucus. He said he wasn't too concerned with the mucus. That it was just natural since I go to the bathroom a lot and it's just the bodies natural way of excretion. He said it was good news I only needed 1 imodium since a lot of his pt's take up to 4 a day. He mentioned that I should continue to stay away from dairy since that is usually a problem for many.

Hi Jenny,
It's funny that they all say that. "Stay about from dairy", and it's probably true. But, they don't seem to think anything else could be causing it. Before I found the GI that I now see, they all told me to stay away from dairy and fiber, nothing else. You had been staying away from dairy hadn't you? What about soy? I know when we ate out you had the fries cooked in soy oil, but said soy didn't bother you. It doesn't me either unless in large quantities.

Oh, we ate at Woodmans's again yesterday.

I had actually been eating a tad bit of dairy, so I am assuming it's that...
Too much soy gives me headaches and sometimes body aches but, not all of the time.
Im so jealous, I am now craving their fried clams! mmmmmm

Jenny, My GI says she believes mucus is food specific and that seems to fit in my case. I've given up eating corn meal (corn chips or tortillas) because I always have mucus the next day or two after eating corn. More like mucus with grainy stuff in it, but you get the idea. It well could be food specific and inflammatory as well.

Just a thought,
Carol

Carol's GI doc is right on target. It's true that the production of mucus is natural (it's a natural response to inflammation), but the intestine only produces copious amounts (noticeable quantities) when it is trying to protect its delicate inner surface from some form of irritating or infectious agent in the fecal stream.
