Hi All. So after reading all of what you had to say about antihistamines, I decided to take a Claritin last night. And this morning I had a norman! Although I have only been going once a day, it has always been loose. Since i am down to one Entocort pill every four days, I was wondering if this could be my answer to getting completely off of it. .... i guess I will have to test this out for a few days to see if it stays this way. God, that would be wonderful. I LOVE YOU GUYS!
And if this is the answer, how am I going to explain this to my GI? I also want to REALLY understand why this works because I am in the process of studying for my nutritionalist certificate so I can not only help people with weight and diabetes issues ( which I already do), but can also help others with IBS and IBD symptoms.

Leah as Claritin (Loratidine) is a H1 agonist it would have some effect on mast cells. I believe a couple of members have noticed similar results.

Leah,
The same thing happened to me a while back, so I started taking one Claritin every day. However, as with all the other meds, supplements, etc. I have tried, I quickly developed an intolerance to it, so after a short time I had to give it up :(. I sure hope it keeps working for you .
The only thing I was able to take without a problem for my histamine intolerance was Histame, which really seemed to help. I still take it from time to time, if my nose starts to act up, and it seems to work for me.
Best of luck with your studies.
Love,
Kari

Hopefully in a week or so you'll be able to show your GI doc the info about that phenomenon in my book, but frankly, I doubt that she or he will believe it.Leah wrote:how am I going to explain this to my GI?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Leah, I'm so glad Claritin (Loratadine) is working for you, too! I followed Joe's lead and am taking Claritin in the morning and a Benadryl at bedtime, and as long as I eat only what I know won't hurt, I've been having normans, too! I hope we don't build up a tolerance for the drugs, because life is so much easier this way!

Like Kari, Benadryl worked for me for about a week, then ceased to be effective. Afterward, I tried other antihistamines, but didn't notice any difference. When I remember, I take Histame when I eat a high histamine food like avocado or chocolate. I'm not sure if it helps, though.
I hope you have continued success taking Claratin. It's always exciting when we find something that works.
