Why not peanut butter?

Why not peanut butter?

Is it because of the aflatoxin? or sugar? Does it cause irritation to the digestion system? I love peanut butter and I buy Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter, but feel guilty for eating it. Should we only eat nut butters like Almond Butter?

If in a flare, sometimes I don't know what caused it, so I have to wonder about PB. I have one of the Morning Glory Muffins each morning with a huge spoon of PB or Almond Butter. I would use PB only if I didn't feel so guilty about eating it.

So, how bad is PB for us MC'ers?

Garina,

Peanuts are a legume (unlike tree nuts), so those of us who are sensitive to soy usually can't tolerate them. If you're not sensitive to soy, they may be OK for you.

Garina,
Peanut Butter has been the latest thing I eliminated from my diet and saw some improvements. I was using it quite a bit on rice cakes, mixed in with my GF oats, etc.

Garina,

I love peanut butter and eat it frequently, but I don't buy the commercial ones with added sugar, as I'm staying away from sugar. Natural Grocers (Vitamin Cottage) makes their own, and the only ingredient is peanuts, so that's the one I usually buy.

If you don't experience an adverse effect, I see no reason why you cannot eat peanut butter. I'm fortunate not to be sensitive to soy, as evidenced by my own testing, as well as by both my Enterolab and MRT test results.

I did not know about the correlation between soy and peanut butter, and Lecithin was "yellow" on my MRT test. So, best I avoid peanut butter and stick to nut butters. Thanks very much.

Cathy,

I put peanut butter on rice cakes, also, and love it that way. They're so bland otherwise ... but will have to stick with almond butter.

Yes, you are fortunate to be able to tolerate soy easily. To tell you the truth, I don't really know if I react horribly to soy. I think I can tolerate some, but knowing PB has a correlation with soy and soy being "yellow", I'm hesitant to buy any more until I am totally cured<smile>.
I love that word cured! Would be nice to know if, in fact, anyone is cured. I do have to say MC is lots easier to deal with since going GF. I don't want to mess up too much.

I'm so happy you can eat soy, because I just read your list of food intolerances. Whew!

You're wise to wait it out Garina. Being gentle with your system while healing, will most certainly pay off. Even though my test results did not show sensitivity to soy, I have only recently (after 2+ years) started to add it to my diet. Today, for the first time, I had some soy milk, and I really enjoyed it. The good thing is that it's loaded with protein, which I can always use more of :grin: . I also started eating soy cheese a couple of weeks ago, and have had no issues with it. After so much time with extreme deprivation, it feels heavenly to start to expand my diet :). Patience, patience and more patience and you will get there as well!!!

Kari, thanks for the patience reminder- I needed that today. Rushed through grocery shopping today and realized I really didn't get anything I could eat except almond milk. Having so few foods to pick from is frustrating especially when there isn't anything quick to eat on hand.

A couple months ago, I realized I was reacting to soy ( slightly), so I have mostly avoided it. I knew full well that peanut better was related, but continued to use it sometimes ( but I mostly switched to sunflower seed butter) because I love it. Just last night, I had a spoonful by itself. ... and an hour later, I was bloated and gassy. I obviously am reacting... but it didn't give me D or anything like that. Such a bummer :(

I was eating WAY too much of it, everday Paula, and would then feel bloated and not good afterwards. I eliminated rice cakes as well as PB and have felt much better since. By the way, I was definitely addicted to it and it took my hubby cleaning out the pantry and throwing the jar away!! I have since gone to buying the small, squeezy containers of either almond butter or sun butter, so that I can get some fat in my diet but not overdo it.

Since Tex mentioned peanut butter and soy in the same sentence, it, at least, gives me incentive to try and give it up completely. I also was addicted to it, I think. Not so much peanuts, but the PB.

I looked up PB, and there is a lot of info regarding aflatoxin, it (PB) having more toxins than any other nut or nut butter. It also stated it was highly acidic, high in Omega 6 fatty acids, and because of the high aflatoxin, has a correlation to liver cancer. Bummer. Then, I read where almond/almond butter is alkalizing, which is a good thing.

I never really thought to look up PB, because it was always something kids to adults grabbed as a quick protein fix, and probably is a staple and on everyone's kitchen shelf.

I remembered that today. Something touched off flare, but I have no idea what. I never know what causes extreme C or the other direction. I just don't have a clue. Because of the C I don't want to take imodium, so now I can't go out.

Cathy - I love my PB also!!! I also was eating it every day. I stopped eating it since reading this post, but haven't thrown it away (yet). I am now using almond butter - still on rice cakes.

It will be interesting if eliminating the PB will make a change for me. :roll:

I also have some PB left, so I am going to mix some in a dollop of Almond Butter ... hoping to feel less guilty!
