5 guys burgers and GF fries
Hi all, Somewhere in this vast amount of information I read that someone said they patronize 5 guys burgers and just get the burger with no bun and then they also get the GF french fries. Since I came across so much great information here in the last couple weeks and have been 100% GF since.......I have been feeling sssssooooo much better with maybe 1 semi-soft/semi normal BM a day. The grumblings were gone for a couple days and I actually felt as if I could venture out somewhere away from my home. So yesterday afternoon late.....we ventured to our local 5 guys to try some supper and see how I do getting out of the house. Well....it was delicious all though I couldn't come close to eating it all but......within 15 minutes after getting home I started going D and went non-stop all night long. One of my roughest nites I've had in a long time. Terrible stomach pain and all. So, my thoughts on this is maybe I need to be a bit careful and start watching for SOY as well. THe fries are cooked in peanut oil......is that what I would determine SOY issue???
Any input would be grateful again.
Thanks all so much.

Jenny,
Yea thats what I thought too because I have hamburger here at home and dont have those problems. But what I didn't know (because of my lack of knowledge) is peanut oil SOY related???? If so then I want to start making sure that I watch for the SOY issues as well.
thanks again for your input

Hi Cathy,
Sorry that you had such a bad experience. Soy is a legume, and it appears that most of us who are sensitive to soy are also sensitive to all or most legumes. Peanuts are a legume, of course.
Have you been avoiding soy prior to that occasion? Your reaction was pretty swift and severe.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hi Tex,
Well I have pretty much been SOY or Legume free (mostly) but that is just because of the kind of foods I like eating anyway. I'm not or have ever been much on legumes......i.e. beans and such. I love fruit and some vegetables and of course meat and potatoes. I don't venture out to far from those types of foods. Since I went GF I noticed that I can tolerate fruit and vegetables much better than I thought I could but that might have been because I was still introducing Gluten in my diet with bread and flour and such. Since I have cut those types of food out.....I can eat a salad with the fresh home grown tomatoes(that I love) with GF salad dressing......found many good meat recipes from Dee's list and an occasional baked potatoe. I also have tried the Udi's GF bread with a grilled cheese sandwich and even had great results from that but I was worried because of the dairy. BTW.....it was the best grilled cheese I think I ever had! So I am going to make a much better effort to avoid SOY and legumes because I truly was miserable for 12 hrs. I had so many good days up til then and was really starting to feel like there was lite at the end of the tunnel. Thank you Tex for all your great info.

I have eaten at Five Guys and avoid their fries because of the peanut oil. But I also think contamination could be a problem. I watched them make the burgers and asked them to change their gloves befoer they made mine. I don't recall them toasting the bun on the grill but that could be a problem as well if that happened.

Hi Mary Beth,
Yep that was one of the things I was pleased with was when I asked for it without a bun.....the clerk said is there a wheat allergy??? I replied yes and she took my receipt and hand gave it to someone and told them wheat allergy and that cook looked at me and said "great......I get to chg my gloves whenever we have a wheat allergy". I was impressed with their reaction and concern and how they handled that. I'm pretty sure it was the fries because like I said earlier...........I fix hamburger at home and NEVER had that reaction.
Thanks again for all the good info and insight!!!!
