Hi All,
I only approved the proof this morning. I thought the rules stated that it usually takes 5 or 6 days for it to be listed. Maybe that only applies to the European sites. I added the Kindle version this afternoon, but I didn't have time to check the conversion before I had to go to work. Now that I've had time to review it, it sucks. The instructions advise not to upload a PDF file, (a PDF file is used for the printed version, because it contains all the embedded formatting instructions). They recommend a DOC file instead, so I uploaded a DOC file. Unfortunately, it didn't convert worth a hoot, because their software converts it into an HTML file. I could upload it in an HTML file, but they recommend uploading a DOC file, instead.
The printed version looks fine, but it appears to me that I'm going to have to figure out how to delete all page number formatting and all references to page numbers for the kindle version. I suppose I might as well try to delete the alphabetical index, as well, because an index is pretty well worthless without page numbers.
I don't have a Kindle, so I looked at it on a PC. Is it just my imagination, or are some of the page breaks corrupted, leaving unnecessary blank paragraphs in many places, etc? Don't I need to find a way to rewrite/revise the files, or is erratic formatting always a problem with the Kindle?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Hey thanks,
That looks much better than my copy looks on my PC version of Kindle. On my PC, the first page number is 281, and after that they alternate between 290 and 291.
There's a formatting error with the paragraphs. It's not good form to indent the first sentence in a paragraph and insert a line break between paragraphs. Either one is fine, but not both. In the printed version, the first sentence is not indented -- there's only a space between paragraphs. I suppose that's not the worst discrepancy in the world -- it simply reveals that I know nothing about proper formatting for books.
Thanks,
Tex

Does it show any page numbers? How about the alphabetical index in the back of the book?
On my PC, it shows Ant's example of a to-the-chef card as a table, with heavy horizontal lines between every line of text. There should be no horizontal lines, of course.

You're about to talk me out of trying to edit it.

Apparently Kindle normally doesn't display page numbers, which allows readers to use any size font preferred, so that part of the conversion appears to be OK.
I suppose the Contents and Alphabetical Index are just superfluous on a kindle. If it displays the chapter titles on the tops of the right hand pages (the way they're displayed on the printed version), that will at least provide some way to locate the various chapters.
Thanks, Joe,
