The muscles in my upper back make all sorts of crunching and popping noises when i roll my shoulders. It's def not coming from my bones. I had a massage last week and she heard the 'crunches' and said it sounded like trapped gas. Could this be the case? Sometimes when I push my chest out I hear a pop in my chest area. Has anyone ever experienced this or may know what it is???
Thankss!
Jenny :)
Jenny there are a couple of possibilities for the noises you are hearing. The first is that the muscle groups that attach to your spine and wrap around to your sides are combined with tendons which are far less flexible than muscle tissue. During a massage or movement those stiffer tendons can have muscle tissue build up and roll around the tendon making this type of noise and sensation
The other common one is that to the left and right of your spinal vertebrae you have a series of joints called facet joints and just like any joint in the body you can make them make a popping sound depending on th type of movement.
I wouldn't worry about it unless it causes loss of sensation or pain as is experienced with a pinched nerve
Joe is so right. No worries jenny. I can make those sounds with certain movements also. I think mine are from my facet joints, but many joints can make those sounds.
Jenny there is often no pain associated with these sounds, it's just the tendons and muscles or facet joints being flexible, which is a good thing. It's when things freeze up so you are not as mobile that pain becomes an issue.
