now my grandaughter cant eat gluten

Post by beni »

hi, havent chipped in lately as I am doing fine so far on one 3mg endocort every 4 days and antihistamine every day, my reason for writing is about my 5 year old grandaughter, a couple of months ago she started having D, very explosive with accidents much to her absolute horror especially as she was going to be starting school for the first time in a few weeks, at first her mum thought she had a bit of a bug but she wasnt a bit ill, this went on for weeks so my daughter decided to cut out gluten, what a result, perfect poos in 3 days!!!!! she was glutened at a friends house the D came back, no gluten ,no D so obviously she is gluten intolerant, very odd, I know of course its not catching but we are all amazed, I suppose she has my gene but why did it flip????????? her mum is a great cook and bakes lots and has put everyone in the house onto GF so the little one wont feel left out, the only thing she is stuck on is breakfast, the norm for them is cereal as it needs to be quick but my grandaughter hates all the GF breakfast cereals, what can we give her to start the day well, my daughter is a single parent and is mother to an 11 year old as well, she has to get kids to school then go to work and she may well have been working at home in the evening, its the one meal she is stuck on , who has good breakfast ideas for a little girl GF and fast, I am sure she would eat a full "Irish Breakfast" if you know what that is but we live in the real world and there isnt time in the morning for that, thanks Beni

Beni,

Sorry to hear about your grandaughter, but at least the diet is working. I would definitely follow up with the doctor with some genetic testing, see if she's anemic etc. Might also need to address appropriate nutritional supplements.

My son is also GF and there are lots of breakfast options. Many Kiddie cereals are now gluten free like GF Rice Krispies, GF Chex, Fruity or Cocoa Pebbles. There is a good line of cereals for kids called EnvroKids. GlutenFreeda makes some good flavored instant oatmeals in single serve packets. Van's makes GF waffles, mini waffles and French Toast Stix. Betty Ctocker bisquick makes decent pancakes, biscuits and waffles, and there are plenty of other more expensive brands. Bacon and eggs are naturally GF. You could make breakfast tacos with corn tortillas. Food for Life makes English muffins that my son loves. Sometimesd I make Fremch toast with GF bread. Every now and then I will allow him to have Kinnikinnick donuts. Honestly, there are lots of kid-appealing breakfasts, albeit not always the most healthy. Luckily my son prefers eggs and English muffins most days - he's never been a cereal fan, but they are availble for those who want it.

Good luck!

Mary Beth

Hi Beni,
In addition to what Mary Beth suggested, my kids love plain yogurt with frozen berries and a little honey before school. Sometimes we add granola - your daughter could use Udi's granolas (which you can get shipped periodically for much less from Amazon -- I get 3 bags once a month). The GF waffles from Trader Joe's are a huge hit too with butter and real maple syrup. They love soft boiled and hardboiled eggs with salt and pepper - and you can do the hard boiling once every few days and just peel in the morning.
My 5 yr old can't do peanut butter, so she likes toast with cream cheese and jelly too.

Weekends are reserved for bacon and eggs or GF Bisquick or Pamela's pancakes.

Your daughter may want to take advantage of the current sale on 6 assorted King Arthur's Baking mixes going on at GlutenFreeSaver.com (like a GroupOn for GF foods).
