beware of "old" food ( reminder)

Post by Leah »

Hi All. Just a friendly reminder. I did it again. I ate something that was in the fridge too long. I am very wary of meats, but stupidly ate some lettuce ( fresh organic red butter lettuce) that I had bought the week before. When it was fresh, I was fine. Friday night I ate a Huge salad and thought I was testing the fact that I ate such a large one. I ended up with WD the next morning. My original conclusion was that I ate too much of it. Well, my husband ate it the next day and he got bloated and pain within a couple of hours! TOO OLD ! It looked fine, but.... no.
I guess I still need to test the amount I can eat again :)

Leah
PS I seem to be ok again this morning

hmmm. At what point do foods cross the line? Is it in 48 hours? or longer? How can we find out?

What the heck! I have never heard of lettuce becoming bad unless it looks brown and wilted.

I agree. I have used week old lettuce if there are no slimy leaves, or dry wilted ones, many a time.

I agree that it's usually OK to use aging lettuce, provided that your digestive system can tolerate lettuce (or some other form of sandpaper) in the first place, but it can grow E. coli, or mold, or who-knows-what, if it's initially inoculated somewhere along the line before or after it gets to our refrigerator.

Hi Leah,

I can relate 100% to you. Last November -March I could eat farmers market lettuce (1 day old lettuce) from my CSA. I had no problems with it.

When it got too hot to grow in FL I had to try to eat grocery store lettuce from Publix. I've not done well on the grocery store lettuce. I don't know if it is b/c I'm off of Entocort now or if it is an "old lettuce" thing.

About 90% of our grocery store lettuce comes from CA, about 7% from Canada, and rarely is it available "fresh from Florida." I'm guessing by the time I try to eat the CA lettuce it is maybe around 14-17 days old. I've pretty much had to back off of lettuce. I'm guessing transport time is 1-3 days from field to shipping dock in CA. 6-7 days to ship to Publix terminal in Jacksonville, another 2 days to get to my Publix store, I buy it and it sits in my fridge for say 3-5 days and by that time you are looking at "old lettuce."

I'm signing up for my farmers market CSA again so it will be interesting to see if I can tolerate the lettuce this December. If not....the boyfriend will be eating it.

I know what you mean, but I'm lucky because I live in Ca. and our lettuce growing season is pretty long. I can get it at the farmers market probably until mid. November. I can eat the bagged Trader Joes baby romaine when I first open the bag, but not too long after that. We are all different and I am just happy that I can eat salad !

I too Leah...........I love my iceburg lettuce with fresh tomatoes and cheese and GF dressing. SOmetimes I even chop up the little green onions in it and I have been extremely fortunate that I can tolerate it with no problem. I can't eat bagged lettuce or salad bar lettuce that has preservatives on it........never could. That was always a problem with me even before MC started. I feel so bad for those that can't enjoy their salads or tomatoes.

Iceberg has never been good for me, but I love baby greens. No tomatoes, no cheese ( I use to always use feta)..... :( Now I use roasted beets, figs, avocado, almonds, proteins....etc.

Mmmm, salad. Used to be one of my favorites w/a big scoop of cottage cheese. Haven't had salad in over a year. Maybe someday down the road.
