grannyh..Millionaire?

Post by Lucy »

Hi grannyh,

I happened to see the young lady from Cypress, Tx. on the afternoon Millionaire show. Think time must've been up before her turn was finished, so guess she'll return tomorrow. Have you heard anything about her appearance on that show?

Is your family excited about the National League Championship? Wasn't that an exciting series with Saint Louis? Their fans are really sophisticated since that franchise has been around so long. They gave the Stros a long farewell applause at the end.
There's really a lot of thinking that goes on during a baseball game. In a way, it's kind of like chess -- lots of strategy. That's why I think it's such a good sport for kids mental development as well as physical. It's slow enough that you have time to plan how you'll execute whereas other sports, you can't take your time quite as much.

Did your sons play little league growing up?
We used to love to watch the neighborhood teams play when I was young. Not much exercise just watching, but it's good, clean fun.

Have no clue what the match-up will be like in Chicago with the White Sox. Just glad we didn't have to play that seventh game as everyone on the WS team has had such a long rest now -- especially the pitchers.
Wow, what a poker face Oswalt has, but tonight, even he looked a little emotional.

Welp, must get some sleep -- been throwing 96 mph fast balls most of the evening, so I'm pooped!

She you in Chicago Saturday!
Yours, Luce

One of my husband's edearing qualities is that he does NOT follow sports..and neither do I.. LOL

One of my sons played whatever sport came along.. he was not very good at many of them but he put his heart into everything he tried. The other son was never into sports at all.. neither playing nor watching.

I can understand people liking to PLAY a sport but never could understand getting excited about watching overpaid athletes.... There isn't a sports arena anywhere in the country that makes money.. yet our taxes go sky high to pay for them... not to mention our utility bills here in Houston.. which help pay for Reliant Stadium (no matter what the company says).

Grannyh,

Nope, believe it or not, I've felt exactly the same way, all my life. I only devote time and money to pastimes that I actually participate in, and none of them involve throwing, chasing, kicking, carrying, or knocking various spheroid shapes around a marked off playing field. I've never been able to understand the unrealistic fascination with overpaid sports celebrites, either.

Civilized societies think in strange ways. We worry about drunk drivers, and pursue them relentlessly. We worry about kids killed by guns, and similar statiscally insignificant events, but I'm guessing that the number of kids killed participating in, and traveling to and from, organized sports, (to say nothing of the adult mortality), overshadows all those numbers. I'm pretty sure it would be difficult to pin down accurate estimates of these statistics, since most folks would be loathe to gore this popular ox.

I'm not saying that sports are particularly dangerous pastimes for kids, because they're not. I'm just pointing out that the sheer magnitude of the level of participation, results in significant numbers of deaths and severe injures, but no one would consider imposing limits on such participation, simply because it's such a popular feature of society.

And, as you say, why are we throwing precious tax money at the pagan gods of sports? Let sports pay it's own way, since it's certainly a non-essencial aspect of public life

That said, I have absolutely nothing against anyone watching, or participating in these sports, to their heart's content--so long as I'm not required to do the same. To each his/her own. Life would be mighty dull, if we all thought alike, and liked all the same things.
