figs

Post by brandy »

I bought some figs to try but I've never eaten them and wasn't sure how to go about it? Do I peel and eat raw? Eat with skin on? Cook? The only figs I've had before are fig newtons.

Thanks, Brandy

Hi Brandy. Are they black figs? I eat them all the time. You can just eat them as is. Some people don't like the "mushy" texture, but the softer they are, the sweeter. I love them cut up raw ( with the skin) and put them in a salad. You can also saute them and eat with meats. Google fig recipes.... it's good in a sauce with pork loin.

Figs are the best! But they have more fiber than I can take, unfortunately. Dried figs are known to help with C
Be careful. Don't eat too many at a time.

BTW - they are wonderful with a salty white cheese! And a slice of watermelon.

I recently went wild for figs. Trader joes was selling fresh black and green ones for $3.99/lb! Raw, grilled, in salads, you name it. Yummy! I plan to plant a fig tree next... Then I'll develop fig intolerance. Sigh.

HI Leah and Jenny,

Thanks for the encouragement! I made a fig sauce and had it with my pork. It was great! I melted a little coconut oil, added a blob of ghee, peeled my figs and chopped them then sauted them in small pan. I added a pinch of salt and let everything simmer down. Yummy! Brandy

Figs are wonderful in any form you can get them. The sauce sounds terrific! Glad you tolerate them.
