"Ethnic" restaurants

Post by maestraz »

So, as the result of a local magazine article, I have discovered a Peruvian restaurant here in Hartford CT, whose owners/cook are all up to snuff on the GF/DF thing. Typical sides are rice, corn, potatoes. The food is delicious:chicken, seafood, beef, and ceviche, which is basically pickled raw fish. I have eaten there twice, no problem at all, and the owners went out of their way to point out GF/DF options. So, if you are in an area that has Peruvian food, maybe you want to check it out. I have also found Mexican, Spanish and Portuguese restaurants that give me good options. I am lukewarm on Thai food, but many entrees seem like they could work. Likewise Indian food, though I haven't tried it yet. While in the Atlanta suburbs last spring, had a delicious, totally GF/DF meal at a Lebanese restaurant. Of course, you have to take your individual dietary limitations into consideration and decide how much you can trust any restaurant you go to, but maybe a cuisine you haven't tried will allow you some options.

Suze, you are very lucky to have a restaurant that is supportive of helping GF/DF eaters

I work with a lady who is from Peru, her lunches always smell fantastic!!

Yes Gabes, I am lucky. When I first got sick, I thought dining out was over, and it's a big part of our social life. We go out less than before, but luckily most of the places we go are pretty tuned in to GF. The dairy adds a layer of complication, but has been accommodated.

Coincidentally, in my local paper this morning, there is a piece on gluten-free dining. Here are the restaurants/bakeries they highlight:

Rose's Wheat-free Bakery and Cafe, Evanston IL
Meet 27, Baltimore MD
Greco's, Willow Springs IL
Wildfire Steakhouse, several locations nationwide
Dandelion Communitea Cafe, Orlando FL

Suze, I too have found that Peruvian works well for me. They eat lots of beef, eggs, and fish. Rice and plantains. We have a peruvian/Mexican restaurant here. I seem to do okay with both. I love Mexican pork ( carnita) with rice, beans and guacamole. Thai is yummy, but i'm afraid of the soy.

Enjoy, Leah

Well I'm glad to hear Peruvian food is doable. We are taking a trip to South America in November and was told that meat and potatoes are a staple in Chile and Argentina. The tour people are aware of my sensitivities so I will hope for the best(and take lots of food in my suitcase).
As far as ethnic restaurants go, I do well at several....Mexican, bar-b-que and Lebanese.

Given my horrible list of no-nos, the only places I can go to are meat and potato joints.
Going out has become something I watch.
