Thanks, Ant, it's been a tough and also a really wonderful summer for me. House guests are now gone and that was my focus in moving back to my own house and making it a place for the "cousin's reunion". Just kind of hard to be here now w/o an agenda.

Monique,

Lucky you! You can eat dairy! Fromage! For years, it was the food I missed the most - I even had dreams about grilled cheese sandwiches. Now I think I am more upset about giving up white potatoes. Prior to finding out on MRT that I was sensitive to them, they were the food I would choose to take with me on the proverbial desert island if I could take only one food.

Fortunately, sweet potatoes are OK, and I love them. They are so versatile - can be made to seem like dessert with some cinnamon, nuts, raisins and/or other goodies mixed in.

Gabes, you are becoming quite the nutritionist! Loved all of your sweet potato data.

Connie, re the hair problem. Have you had your thyroid checked? You know, coming from a physician, this may sound blasphemous, but I don't trust a lot of western medicine either. I refused to take predisone for my MC, when the GI doc suggested it after Asacol did nothing for me. That's when I went online and found Dr. Fine and the gluten connection. Re your continuing digestive problems, have you identified any sensitivities other than dairy and tapioca? Could dairy or soy be giving you problems like so many here? Just a thought.

Hugs,

Polly

Connie, I'm just finishing up a bottle of Nioxin conditioner. What is it guaranteed for? My hairdresser suggested it to increase volume. I have very fine hair.

I read once that hair starts falling out about 3 months after a major stress event. I paid attention, and sure enough, 3 months after my dad died, my hair fall-out rate increased. I have noticed again recently that it is falling out more, 3 months after a tense week when it became clear that my FIL's Alzheimer's was getting really bad, and we had to make arrangements for him to go into a care facility. Stress must shock hair somehow. So your hair may improve when your stress lessens.

Love,

Martha,

I have very fine hair as well. The woman who cut my hair yesterday suggested I use both the Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. It's guaranteed to improve your hair or you can return it for a refund in 30 days. She couldn't tell if what she was seeing was breakage or hair that's been growing back in slowly that fell out at around the same time, but she thought it was a bit of both. She uses it herself. My hair is shoulder length and I use a curling iron to curl the ends under and she said I should never use the hottest setting and that using the conditioner, which I never use, would keep the hair from being damaged by the heat. We'll see.

Has it helped your hair? It cost about 22 bucks for the 2 bottles. Sorry to hear about your FIL. We're at that age where our parents are failing.

No, I haven't had my thyroid checked, Polly, been wondering recently if that might not be an issue in relation to swelling in the back of my knees and pain when kneeling, which I've been doing a lot recently when working in the yard. I just need a complete physical and blood work done, I think. It's been years. I almost never eat anything with tapioca anymore and I don't think dairy is a problem for me since I've been GF. I haven't ID'd any other foods. I just have NO appetite.

Thanks for the hugs, Deb.

Connie,

I didn't notice any difference when I switched to the Nioxin conditioner, but I had already been using another pricey product, Les Cheveux, for a couple of years, and when I switched to that from grocery store shampoo and conditioner, I did notice a difference. My hair is easier to manage, and just in general looks and feels better. It' still very fine, of course, but just looks nicer.

Love,

Is Nioxin supposed to actually thicken hair? Mine is as fine as a baby's although the hairdresser said it I quite healthy. I would love a bit more body. Can you buy it in a pharmacy?

Glad to hear that, Martha, haven't used it yet, but will tonight.

Christine, from what the woman told me at SuperCut's yesterday (yes, I obviously really pamper myself), it is supposed to strengthen and heal damage. I know that once hair sprouts from your head it is effectively dead, but I felt her hair and it felt better than mine, so I bought it there. She said they always have a 2 for 1 special, which meant that I got both the shampoo and conditioner for the price of 1 and they will refund that $ within 30 days if it isn't helping, so keep your receipt.

wmonique2 wrote:Interesting that you are taking the same meds I am...amitriptylene as well. It's an anti-depressant that helps with digestive issues. I started it a little more than a week ago and within 48 hours I started eating and feeling better. I take only 10mg. The first few days I couldn't keep my eyes open, day or night. Then I changed the timing of when I take it and now I am OK. I sleep good at night and I am not sleepy daytime. It made a huge difference in how I feel. And I started eating too, which I had stopped doing and I was really concerned how long I could sustain this starvation.
You know I didn't do well on the paleo diet (frankly, that's what got me in so much trouble). Paleo had too much roughage for me. I was eating mostly fruits and vegetables, but all the fruits skins and fiber upset my system. I am staying away from so much roughage now, letting my intestines heal. Then, maybe, I'll introduce a bit of it.
I am having fruits and vegies but I am juicing it so the fiber is not there, while I still get all the nutrients.
I guess we all have to try various things until we find what works for each one of us.
I hope you start feeling good soon...it sucks when you're sick all the time. I have been that way for the most part of this year.
Take care,

Monique
We do seem to have very similar cases! I started off on 25mg and I could barely stay awake for half of the day, so my doctor had me cut the pills in half and now I'm doing much better. I'm really glad you can start eating more foods, because that sounds awful! I have realized I can't do raw veggies at all, and my GI advised me to stay away from too much fiber, so I've been having to adjust again because I don't do so well on grains either. So now I'm kind of focusing on meat with squash, sweet potatoes, and potatoes as my sides and I seem to be doing well with that. I might try to add in more greens soon, but I am pretty satisfied with what I'm eating right now (especially since it's winter squash season!) so I think I am just going to stick with it.

My husband and I share a hairdresser who has recommended Nioxin for both of us. My hubby for slight male hair thinning, me for more obvious hair thinning!
Once I read the ingredients, I was a bit concerned (for me).

First of all, you're supposed to use the entire system to get the guaranteed effects. That means the shampoo, conditioner AND scalp activating treatment. All the products seem to be intended to stimulate blood flow to the scalp (as is needed in male baldness...not necessarily true in female hair thinning). They do so by triggering tingly sensations (menthol and peppermint oil), and causing inflammation and redness (methyl-nicotinate in the scalp treatment-- http://www.truthinaging.com/ingredients ... nicotinate)

I decided there were too many other irritating chemicals in the treatment to make it worthwhile for me.

You can read the description and ingredients here and decide for yourself if it'll work in your unique situation:

Zizzle,

Note that they increase blood flow by promoting inflammation. That's an old trick that works, but I'm not sure it's a healthy trick, since it works the same way that MC and other autoimmune diseases are created (by a regular, or chronic inflammatory process).

Paint me skeptical, but I'm not convinced that chronic inflammatory processes are beneficial for the long-term health of body systems or organs.

This review on Amazon was enlightening. It seems P&G bought Nioxin, moved its manufacture to Mexico from Atlanta, and the whole formula changed So buyer beware!
I've used the whole Nioxin system (#1) for about 2 years now. I finally gave up and stopped. After all this time and money spent, I have no perceived increase in hair density like the bottle claims and all it has done is made my hair fall out even more! I know most people say it falls out at the beginning of use because its dead hair and takes time to improve the scalp environment but my hair would fall out after Nioxin use every single time up until today. I'm now going back to regular shampoos and conditioners so my hair will stop falling out! Don't believe in this product... its a rip off. I also confirmed with 2 different Dermatologists that its all a gimmick and does nothing! That, with my own personal experience is definitely proof enough that its a waste of money! Don't waste your time and money people.

Zizzle,

The stuff I bought was the System 1 shampoo and conditioner, I didn't buy the scalp stuff, she didn't recommend that. She only used these two and her hair felt to the touch as if it were denser than mine. She had no products like gels or mousse in it. I haven't tried it yet, so I'll keep researching before I do. http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod. ... tid=183838 It would seem that it's the scalp stuff that would cause the "inflammation" process.

Hi Gabes,

I've been busy with work but I just wanted to thank you for the extremely interesting sweet potato report! (I'm trying to eat more sweet potatos on my paleo journey).

PS. Love your movie star fantasy!
