Jennie-O turkey

Post by DebE13 »

Why do manufacturer's have to use "natural flavoring" as an ingredient? Is it that secret? I emailed them since I thought maybe it was something in the meat that is not allowing me to resolve my WD issues. A simple reply came back as: rosemary. Now why in the world couldn't they just put it on the ingredients list? It almost makes me not believe them. I lost the convience of deli meats because I fear the natural flavors will containe soy. Big sigh.

I know! I hate it when I see "Natural flavors". Drives me nuts. I think the fresh turkey I bought the other week said that. I'm glad you called.

I called the makers of Chapstick today cause I had heard gluten was in some chapstick. They say that they do not use any gluten-containing ingredients but they can't guarantee that it hasn't gotten contaminated with Gluten from the suppliers. Some use conveyer belts with wheat flour on it. I use Chapstick every night! I even heard that some Natural flavorings have MSG in it which is not good for us. And now I just learned that the ingredient "Tocopherals" could be derived from wheat so have to check on that. Unbelievable where all this gluten is hidden in. And now I have to check up on my lipstick as well! arrrggghhh!

Deb
the 'flavour' might be rosemary, but there may be soy involved in getting it on the skin of the turkey

depending on how you ask the question is what type of answer you will get, i always ask for a full list of ingredients that are involved

Terri

Tocopherals is generally soy, about 98% of lip balms, lipsticks on the market have soy, about 60% will have gluten or other types of irritants to those of us with MC.

Hi Deb,

I think you can solve this issue by just buying plain ground turkey. I don't buy ground turkey though-- I realized that ground turkey includes all of the turkey skin. It truly grossed me out...so I buy ground turkey breast and put it my own spices and finely chopped onions, parsley etc... safer and better for you. It may take a teeny bit of work but it's worth it for us, particularly.

I grew up in a household where my mother grounded everything herself....I miss those days when things didn't seem that complicated...

Thank you Gabes! I had no idea. I don't know quite yet if I react to soy or not. I suppose if I do I should just stick to vaseline for my lips then. I really need to do Enterolabs to see what I'm intolerant to....will sure make things a lot easier.

Thanks again for the information.

Good to know- it's too bad they can't just put "soy" on the label and make it easier to make safe choices. I clearly stated I have issues with gluten, soy, dairy, and eggs. I don't know who answers the questions but maybe the quality of the answer depends on how much an individual understands the issue. Maybe I'll ask again to see if I get a different answer.

I've thought about grinding my own meat since oddly enough it's more appealing but haven't tried it yet. At least then I wouldn't have to question what's in it.

Terri, I found my lips got "dependent" on certain balms. Vaseline is a petroleum product which I never cared for. Coconut oil works best for me with no long-term consequences. In fact, it's all I use for a face moisturizer. Deb

I was diagnosed only a week ago with a soy allergy, so I've been going through all my foods and getting rid of things. Lots of GF mixes contain soy or "guar gum"! I had forgotten about the lip balms, though...thanks, Gabes! I just threw out several Burt's Bees products. My generic Meijer brand lip balm seems to be okay, though. I always use Vaseline on my lips at home. Coconut oil is a good idea to try!

Thanks for the idea of the coconut oil! I'm always so amazed at the knowledge on this forum.

What's wrong with Guar gum? I think some type of gum is in my almond milk. What about Xanthum gum?

Terri,

All of the sources of gums (except for xanthan gum) are derived from legumes, including carob bean, guar, mesquite, etc. Xanthan gum is produced from the slime left after a certain strain of bacteria, Xanthomonas campestris, decompose certain sugars, such as glucose, sucrose, or lactose. In this country, all xanthan gum is currently produced using corn sugar as a feedstock. Even though xanthan gum is not a legume derivative, most members of this board seem to react to it. I would guess that we react to certain chemical residues left over from the decomposition process.

Deb
I didnt have turkey for almost 2 years, as there was no Gluten, Yeast, Soy free product available
12 months ago a product came onto the market where the birds are free range, fed organic gluten and soy free grain, and there are NO additives to the meat. it is as close to pure as i am going to get in the market place

the more you heal, the more sensitive you can become to the 'minor' ingredients like 'natural flavours' that are put onto meats.

Here in Aus the demand for soy free has grown dramatically over the past 2 years. When i first went soy free i struggled to find stuff, now it is much easier. And due to our labelling laws it is very easy to confirm if a product has soy or not.

Terri
i am a bit against vaseline, it is a chemical type product. Here in Aus there is a product 'lanolips' that is pure lanolin. Coconut oil or pure cocoa butter is a good option i have blended these two together for my own home made lip balm.

For safe deli meats try Boar's Head if you can find it in your area. Definitely GF.

Hmmm, doesn't sound like anything I've seen in my area. Will have to look harder. Is ir prepackaged or in the deli case?
