It appears that we've been duped once again by the drug companies (with the FDA's blessing). Most drugs do not lose their effectiveness for decades. Aspirin and amphetamines appear to be the only exceptions. Obviously, the more drugs thrown out by consumers, the more money the drug companies make.
So Cantrell and his colleagues went about testing the content of those boxes, which had expired 28 to 40 years earlier. Out of the 14 compounds they analyzed, 12 still fulfilled government requirements for potency, according to the team's report, released Monday.
Cantrell said his report had been rejected by a number of major medical journals and that the one that finally published it, the Archives of Internal Medicine, had scrubbed references to drug shortages.
Now isn't that interesting, that no one wanted to publish that report? That sort of suggests that the "Good Old Boy's" Club that controls what's published in medical journals, and what's suppressed, is in bed with the drug companies, doesn't it. Why else would they try to suppress such valuable information?

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
I have been keeping old stuff and using the newer stuff first... for years. You never know when you won't be able to get a drug when you need it. Have had to wait for weeks for drugs that used to always be available.

Hi, On one intersection where I live and in the next town there is a Walgreens, Rite Aid and CVS on three of the four cormers. They made it easier by adding a drive thru by the pharmacy. How many people are given a drug to treat the side-effects of the first drug? I have. No wonder they can compete against each other. Jon
how about antibiotics? do they go off? my daughter in law who is a nurse assistant in a british hospital told me all out of date antibiotics are sent to africa for the poor so one must assume they dont go off for some time after their date, Beni
That's probably true (that antibiotics last a lot longer than the labeled expiration date), but if that research team tested any old antibiotics, it wasn't mentioned in the article , so we can only guess.

I've always kept a supply of Cipro on hand for sudden UTIs. Sometimes the drug is past the expiration date.
I checked for the effectiveness of drugs with an expired date and found an interesting study online. The U.S. government stockpiles medications and selected ones were tested with an expiration date from 10 years prior, as I recall. Cipro was one of the drugs tested. The drugs were found to be just as potent 10 years after the expiration date.
I haven't been able to find the study again; perhaps someone else can. I haven't worried about expiration dates since I read the study.

You never know what you can do until you have to do it.
Cipro works great for UTIs. But FYI, guess what else does? D-mannose, an OTC supplement. Every time I feel that old familiar twinge I check my urine with a dipstick. If it shows a UTI I take D-mannose for a couple of days. It works great!
