Any ideas on GF and SF crackers?

Post by wmonique2 »

Hello my friends,

Since I found out that I am both gluten and soy sensitive I have to add another burden to my shopping. I was previously only concerned about gluten, now I have to add soy to that list.

My gluten-free crackers NUT-THINS BY BLUE DIAMOND are GF but they are made in a facility were soy products are produced as well.

Anyone can recommend another brand that is palatable and that is both GF and SF? It will save me the burden of testing countless cardboard concoctions that only a starved carnivore will eat ;-).

Thank you all!

Love,

Hi Monique,

Back to Nature brand "Sesame Seed Gluten Free Rice Thin Crackers" are good. They make one other flavor that is gf and sf, but I don't have the box handy. Not all of the Back to Nature things are safe for us, so read the label.

Food Should Taste Good brand has several flavors of chips that can double as crackers. Just this morning I bought the Olive and Sweet Potato flavors. The Olive says "it's a cracker, too!"

Martha

Martha,

Thanks! You get them everywhere? In the GF section of supermarkets or whole foods or trader joe?

The Back to Nature brand I buy at Sprouts.
Sprouts also carries Food Should Taste Good, although my supermarket (Kroger) sometimes has them in the GF section.

Hi Monique,

Edward and Sons offer a variety of crackers (Rice Snaps) with various flavors and various ingredients (IOW you have to check the ingredient list), but some of them are free of both gluten and soy, and these are very tasty crackers that you should be able to find in most health food stores.

http://www.edwardandsons.com/es_shop_snaps.itml

For example, the ingredients of the Unsalted Plain, Toasted Onion, and Onion Garlic are:

Ingredients: Organic Brown Rice Flour, Organic White Rice Flour.

Ingredients: Organic Brown Rice Flour, Organic White Rice Flour, Toasted Minced Onion, Organic Expeller Pressed Sunflower Oil, Organic Garlic Powder, Salt. Organic Ingredients 96%.

Ingredients: Brown Rice Flour*, Black Rice Flour*, Expeller-Pressed Palm Oil, Salt, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder. *Whole grain rice flours.

Love,
Tex

Sadly I tested sensitive to rice. This is really limiting. Oh well.

Just as an aside, I've been using ground nut and rice crackers for "breading" for fish. Works great. Put them in the food processor with seasonings of your choice and grind.

Nancy, if you can eat corn, try the Food Should Taste Good chips. They call them tortilla chips, but they work as crackers too. No rice in the Sweet Potato or Olive, which I have handy here. The corn is non-GMO.

I like rice and corn Crunchmaster multi grain sea salt crackers. Some flavors contain soy but not the sea salt flavor.

Thank you Tex (thanks for the details, sounds like they'll be right up my GF/SF alley), Martha, Christine, Sheila for all your suggestions. I am taking notes...

Martha---what are you doing to me? i was at kroger this afternoon and found the sweet potato and olive chips...they are ADDICTIVE! Good God, I couldn't STOP eating them! Anyway, I made a dinner out of the sweet potatoes.....I am sure they SPIKE them with something, maybe NICOTINE or who-the-hell-knows-what  It's not normal to want to devour a whole bag (I'm a very fussy and disciplined eater!) but I lost total control.

No corn either. I am pretty much no grains but I do buckwheat and quinoa for cereals.

Thank you Monique for asking this question because I was still thinking the Blue Diamond Nut Thins.were safe! And of course thank you to everyone else for the cracker substitutes. Of course, realistically I have no real need for crackers without cheese.... For me, crackers are just a vehicle for cheese and nothing else but I sure wish I had some other ideas for them. I haven't done the Enterolab testing yet so there's still hope! Pleez oh pleez let me have results like Monique's!

Cheers,

Pam

Hey Pam,

You haven't done the enterolab yet? well, hurry up, girlfriend! you may have wonderful results, like mine! (I cringed having to shell out nearly $600 for it but I did it because I wanted to feel better and peace of mind).

The soy thing is proving to be a pain in the neck. It's in EVERYTHING! so I am spending lots of time reading labels. Did you look at the link Tex provided? it lists the various names soy is camouflaging under---you need a chemistry degree to understand it all!

And the crackers? I use them for soup too since we can't have bread...and I eat them as is for snacks since I am limiting the fiber in fruit. (How did my life get so bloody complicated???)

As you say, Cheers!
