Proposition 37 Pits Big Industry Against The Little Guys

Post by tex »

Hi All,

Yes, I realize that this is a political issue, and therefore not a suitable topic for a board such as this, but since most of us are already forced to deal with many food issues, I have a hunch that there aren't many dissenters among our membership.
Who is for it?

Consumer and public-health groups have been joined by organic farmers and natural- and organic-food marketers such as Amy's Kitchen and Lundberg Family Farms. Adman and activist Alex Bogusky has given $100,000 in support.

Who is against it?

The biggest donor to the No campaign is Monsanto, which sells seeds for genetically modified crops designed to increase yields. Other opponents are big packaged-food marketers such as PepsiCo, Nestle, Coca-Cola Co. and ConAgra, which have donated millions of dollars to the No campaign.

The main issue as I see it is not so much whether or not GMO foods are harmful (since the jury is obviously still out on that one), but why shouldn't consumers have the right to know? This is the information age (or maybe we're already past the information age — I don't usually keep up with such catchy phrases used to describe "fashion trends"), so why should that information be suppressed? :headscratch: :monkey:

This is the only proposition that I am voting for that most everyone I have talked to is against! I dont think i have convinced many of my very conservative family and friends into voting for it. ( yes....here in South California there are a few conservatives). Their point is that there is increased cost to change labels and there are likely "un-intended consequences" ----whatever they are.

Yeah, that's what they're hearing from Monsanto's ads, Christine.

Pretty shocking to see who has supported the no on 37 campaign and who hasn't supported it.

I thought this was a California proposition. I didn't realize it was national. I am definitely voting for it, but I have heard the radio ads and it even said that it would add $400 to the average family food bill. I think California is mostly for it, but those ads are pretty powerful. Monsanto has a lot of money to spend on them.

it would add $400 to the average family food bill.
Or should that read "the average family potential poison bill".

Perhaps "Advertising Age" needs to keep up with the times and rename itself "Suppression of Information Age" :banned:

End of Ant's rant

Thanks for posting this, Tex.

I have been signing online petitions about this for months now. As you know, because of my multiple intolerances, I absolutely MUST know everything possible about any food I put in my mouth. Not to mention the fact that I live in fear that "they" will tamper with the few foods I can safely eat and further limit my choices. Of course, I can eat organic, but it P***** me off that the GMO fields can even negatively impact the non-GMO fields. This could potentially be a matter of life and death for folks like us, IMHO.

We are living increasingly in an era where big corporations have all the power.

Love,

Polly

It appears that Prop 37 is only for California. I looked and could not find it on the ballot for Arizona. Correct me please if I am wrong.

Charlotte,

You're correct, of course. I've already voted, and it definitely wasn't on the ballot in Texas.

Nada here in Colorado regarding that Proposition.

Unfortunately, I think today most uninformed average Americans would choose beer and pizza for their football games over healthy food with transparency and disclosure any day.

Times are a changin' but not that fast, IMOHO. Forcing change is going to take a lot more "boots on the ground" and big dollars but the more consumers and healthcare providers become aware of our poisoned food chain, the easier change will be accepted. Kudos to Amy's Kitchen, Lundberg Family Farms, and all those proactively making their voices heard for the benefit of everyone.

Cheers,

If you look at the extra cost of $400 / year for food that Monsanto claims. Add up the lost time at work, Dr. appointments, meds and the pain from the diseases that are caused by the dangers in the food and water supply. The extra cost for healthy food would be a huge savings. Jon

Yeah, Leah, the level of influence and power they have is only second to Halliburton and now I'm in delicate waters here, I suppose.

If it is on our ballot, think not, I will definitely be voting yes.
