Pasta, discovered a great one ...

Post by wmonique2 »

Hello y'all!

Friends, I found a great pasta IF you can have corn.

PASTA D'ORO, by Sam Mills at Kroger and most healthfood stores. It's GF/EF/DF/SF, yeast and GMO free. Delicious if you cook it al dente. I like it a lot (I know my pasta, lived in Italy for many years!). Forget about quinoa pasta, it doesn't measure up. Quinoa was a big disappointment to me.

The Olive Garden (the restaurant) serves quinoa pasta in their gluten free menu...You'd have to be REAL hungry to eat it. If you go there, stick to the salmon and vegies. The waitress who served me was GF and she said she doesn't eat it ;-)

Monique, even my Italian husband likes the Sam Mills pasta.
Jenny, which supermarket in your area carries LeVeneziane? I'm in CT.

Suze,
Have you ever been to Dee's One Smart Cookie in Glastonbury? They are AMAZING! I know they sell it there. I used to live in CT and whenever I go home I always have to go to Dee's. I'm in Boston now and a health food store near me sells the pasta. I'm sure you can find it online.

I was actually provoked to make chicken Parmesan for dinner by this thread, LOL. Monique, we taste-tested Trader Joe's corn-based pasta tonight and both agreed-- Sam Mills is better. Less sharp aftertaste of corn. We've also tried Schar pastas, which would be my second choice so far.

I'm afraid I am not as positive about the vegan mozzarella "cheese" I topped mine with. Very strange taste. Brand is Galaxy, bought at Whole Foods. I've also tried Daiya, yuck. Does anyone know of a decent cheese substitute?

Suze,

Good luck on the cheese subs. I've tried a few, none of them come even close to being palatable. I even tried almond milk cheese and that sucked too...Thank the universe that I can actually have the real thing :-)

PASTA D'ORO is the only pasta I use. It's reasonably priced and cooks well.

Hi Suze,

I havn't tried to make it but there are some replacement cheese recipes in Dee's Kitchen that Dee developed. I stumbled upon some threads awhile back. Even if you don't decide to make it the cheese making discussion between Dee and Tex is fascinating. I believe Dee found a couple of test batches to be "acceptable."
