probiotics and D

Post by Leah »

Ok, does probiotics cause D for anyone else? I stopped taking them a few months ago simply because I didn't feel as if they were contributing to me feeling better. This past week i have been getting more bloating and pain than usual. I thought it might be that my husband was filling my tea kettle with tap water ( we have chloramine treated water and it kills EVERYTHING it hits- including all good bacteria. It kills fish instantly!) Anyway, I decided to start back on the probiotics this morning just to repopulate the good bacteria. That was at 8 this morning. At 11:30, I had a bout of WD. Surprise!

Think I should not take it again?

PS. GF Culturelle

Hi Leah, Do you cook with the tap water? If you cook pastas and rice the water is absorbed. Does the boiling eliminate the chemical? That sounds like the water bill I used to get from the city where I owned a building and it said the water contains harmful bacteria. Since you have not used the probiotic for a while did it go past the expiration date. Jon

Hi,

Yes, when they had me on them my D got worse. No one was able to tell me why.

Hi Leah,

Sorry about the D. Since you were having the bloating and some pain all last week, it's probably due to the tap water, I would think. How many days did you use the tap water? If you were using it consecutive days and having issues, I can see where D would come into play eventually. I would think a probiotic would take a little while to cause D but I'm definitely not an authority on those things. Probiotics are such a mystery. I can see where maybe a week on probiotics would cause it but not within a few hours. Or it could have exacerbated whatever was causing your bloating and pain and you got the D. Hope it's short-lived! You seem to bounce back quickly so hoping the best for you this time.

Take care,

Terri

After the one episode this morning, I seem fine.

I looked at the ingredients of the probiotic and noticed that chickory is in it. I know that can cause gastro problems. Maybe it was that. Perhaps i will look for a different one.... maybe I don't need one at all.

As for the water, Chloramine is a substitute for chlorine. They changed our water about 8 years ago. There have been complaints from many people of intestinal problems and also rashes. it's just so powerful at killing bacteria. No boiling it doesn't get rid of it. I was having problems years ago as soon as they switched the additive, so I try not to ingest too much of it.

Okay, have to go watch the results from the election. I'm very anxious ( I guess you can guess who I want to win since I live in SF :)

Hope everything is back to normal for you today! I didn't know that about chicory. Interesting. After your post, I've decided I need to check what's in our water.

Oh yes, we know who most of you Californians vote for. Just like most people know how we Texans vote. I was praying for our country last night no matter who won. I just the hope the next 4 years will be better than the last 4.

Take care,

Well Terri, if there is some compromise in Congress, then maybe more can get accomplished. I hope so.

Leah,
My water has been treated with Chloramine for the last 8-10 years! It sure tasted better after the switch from chlorine. We had a beta fish that did fine in it, so long as we added a few drops of water treater in the tank. Do you have any links to the effects of chloramine? I was under the impression it wasn't any worse than chlorine (except for the fact it doesn't evaporate out the way chlorine does). My cats have been fine with it, although my 16 yo cat has common thyroid and kidney disease. I've often wondered how horrible our Potomac River treated water must be. I bought a high quality 2 stage filter, but not reverse osmosis.

Regarding the probiotics, I had a severe reaction within hours to a multi-strain probiotic I tried. I kept taking it, but the extreme D got worse and I finally stopped on day 5. I've never had any noticeable reaction from Culturelle though. Of course, each of our bacteria vary, as does our immune system reaction to them...

Here is some information on the byproducts and side effects of chloramine use in drinking water:

Tex,
That article is beyond me.

I found Leah's likely source, a Bay Area organization: Citizens Concerned About Chloramine (CCAC)

http://www.chloramine.org/

The timing coinciding with my autoimmune onset is rather curious, but I'm not jumping to any conclusions.

Zizzle, that's the one. All I know is that when they changed out water ( which was fine before) I started to get gut issues ( before Dx) . They resolved within a couple of weeks after switching to bottled. I have killed a beta fish by accident also.

Everything I read is that it's more of a lung irritant if you inhale the vapors (like showering). I wonder if whole-house humidifiers are also a problem? There doesn't seem to be research on what it does when you drink it. The "research" on their website is hardly compelling, so the jury is still out. I mean if it was that toxic, people in chloramine-treated communities would ALL be sick, no?

I think most people's systems can handle it. Mine is just obviously more susceptible. No surprise.

Hi Monique,

It's good to see a post from you again. I was afraid that you might have run off with another discussion board.

Seriously, it's good to see you posting again. I hope you haven't been ill. I've missed your southern French accent.

Love,
Tex
