Low vitamin D levels in remission

Post by Christine. »

Well, I'm leaving for Chile, Argentina and Brazil tomorrow with a suitcase full of food but my pcp called with the results of my regular tests--all ok-- except I asked for a vitamin D test. I have been taking 1000 mg per day. My level was 25. How much more do I take per day? I put the bottle in the suitcase and plan to double or triple the dose. I guess even though I don't have D and generally go only once a day, that I'm not absorbing all nutrients. It's been wonderful not to gain weight even though I feel that I eat a lot. What do you recommend?

Hi Christine,

Have fun! My levels have not been tested so I might not be a good respondent. I've been taking 3000 10 mths of year and 4000 next 8 weeks (winter and family stress time in Florida)

Probably good to up you dose while you travel. Brandy

Hi Christine,

I'm not sure what you'll find in Chile and Brazil, but you should find plenty of grass-fed beef in Argentina, to satisfy your craving for a "natural" steak.

I get the impression that most of us seem to take somewhere in the 3,000 to 6,000 IU range of vitamin D3 per day, but as you say, many of us have malabsorption issues.

You should be OK. You're not really deficient — it's just that most of us like to have a somewhat higher level, as sort of a security blanket. LOL.

I hope you have a wonderful time, and zero health issues for the duration of the trip.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
