Nail Polish

Post by DebE13 »

I was reading an article last night about the dangers of nail polish on health. It was a forum of some sort so I don't know the accuracy of the statements/opinions that were posted but it made me wonder if it's something to be considered. I have never known my toes to be without polish and kind of like it that way. I also like to highlight my hair but have been postponing do so since my already fine/thin hair is thinning even worse than usual. Any opinons or experiences?

Hadn't heard anything regarding issues with nail polish but if you are worried about or are sensitive to those chemicals you can buff your nails to give them a nice shine!

I have had problems in the past regarding thinning hair. Medications were the problem. When I stopped or cut back on the meds, my hair started to grow back. A pharmacist has told me that thinning hair was a rare side affect listed for those meds (Asacol & Cymbalta). The doctor that prescribed the Cymbalta told me to take 400mcg of Selenium per day. He said that might help & it did. I later learned that Selenium is needed to help thyroid meds work and low thyroid can cause your hair to thin.

Good luck.

Hair (and nail) health is reliant on amino acids.

the only time since my MC Dx that my hair has detoirated in quality was when i was travelling for work overseas, and not having my home made bone broth.
(home made bone broth has over half the amino acids the body needs)
I also use Mesquite powder in my rice protein shakes, which is high in protein, calcium, magnesium and lysine.

there are natural nail polish's available (they are double the cost of normal ones) I still use commercial nail polish on my toe nails, albiet as much as possible i have periods of no nail polish ie winter or if i am having a quiet weekend.
when the budget allows i get foils and colour in my hair, with commercial products (hair dressers that use natural based ones are double the cost) I take antihistamines before hand as the colouring tends to aggrevate histamine/mast cell reaction

it depends on how reactive you are and how much exposure to other stuff you are having.
I dont wear any other make up and all my body care products are natural, (Gluten and Soy free)

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), the substance that makes fingernail polish dry to a smooth varnish. While DBP is banned in Europe, it can sometimes still be found among nail polish ingredients in the U.S. Given the number of other chemicals used to make nail polish, however, DBP is just one of a list of dangerous toxins sometimes found in this beauty product.
Industrial solvents are commonly included as nail polish ingredients and may pose a threat to the nervous system due to habitual or prolonged inhalation of their fumes. Toluene, for instance, is one ingredient that promotes a feeling of intoxication when inhaled. It has also been linked to neurological disturbances in humans and impaired fetal development in animal studies. Another solvent, methylene chloride, is classified by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health as a potential carcinogen. It also increases the risk of hypoxia in people with cardiovascular disease, a condition that depletes tissues of oxygen.
If you observe when you purchase a nail polish, alot of the manufacturers are now labeling that their polish is free of some of these chemicals.

Thanks Dee- there's so much to know about everything!!! Ran to the medicine cabinet to look and of course, there is no "ingredient" list. I've started to be in tune with all the external products that I use but didn't give my nail polish a thought until now. I'm not sure why not considering it's paint. I doubt if removing my blue toe nail polish would cause an aha moment but I'm going to look into a safer brand as I'm sure that my two dollar bottle of polish has everything you mentioned in it. I don't ever wear it on my fingernails because the chips drive me crazy. My hands are always in the dirt so it's not worth my time. It'd probably be smarter to just not wear any but sometimes it's the little things about "self" that make it easier to deal with the traumas of everyday life. BUT I'm still holding off on my highlighting because it may be just plain stupid to subject myself to more chemicals when I already have such an issue with thinning hair. I get pretty good at riding the fence when it's to justify something I want.

Hi Deb,

I'm pretty much wearing toenail polish and sandals 9 months a year. The fumes get to me but toenail polish and Florida is de rigueur. My makeup use is pretty minimal--maybe for a special event. Brandy

Oh how I miss my sandals!! It's depressing that I'll have to wait five months before I can bring them out again. Every year the idea of being a snow bird becomes more appealing. Too bad I'm too young to even think about retirement.
