Need shoulder to cry on

Post by m »

My cat Stinky was just put down. She had cancer and was becoming miserable. I think this is one of the hardest things I've ever done. I feel like my heart is breaking. She was a wonderful cat and I will miss her very much.

So sorry Melissa. We get so attached to our pets and we feel it so much when they go. A good cry helps.

Love

Oh Melissa I am so sorry. I wish there was something I could say to help ease your pain. But I know the loss of a pet is heartbreaking. As hard as it was, you did the right thing for Stinky.

Love,
Carrie

I'm sorry for your loss Melissa. Pets are part of our family and quickly find a place in our heart. As with any loss, your heart will ache for awhile.

I hope you are in some way comforted that the misery is gone for her and she is no longer in pain.

Many hugs to you!

Mars

Oh...I am so sorry Melissa..I had to take my cat to the vet today...she has been scratching like crazy...no fleas, but she obviously has some discomfort so they gave her a kitty cotisone(sp?) shot. On the way, I had a flash that one day I will have to deal with putting her down. She's only 7 and I am already sad just thinking of it! My heart goes out to you....Stinkey was very lucky to have had such a wonderful pet mommy....you did the right thing. Take care...hugs from me too...Love, Jill

Melissa, I'm so sorry! It is SO hard to loose a beloved pet. I still have a picture of my first cat from when I was a kid framed and hanging on the wall. I lost the first cat I had as an adult this summer and I have the picture all picked out, I just have to find the time to get it framed. Hang in there.

Oh Melissa,

I am crying with you. This is one of the most difficult parts of life. When you feel up to it, I'd like to hear more about Stinky - how old, how she got her name, etc. We are all sharing your grief.

Love,

Polly

I am so sorry for your loss. At one time or another we have to say goodbye to our little buddies and as one who has also had to put a pet down because of them being sick, I feel for you. I try not to think about having to say goodbye to my little Pebbles. So I am also sending you a big gentle hug to comfort you.

Gentle hugs
Wendy

Thank you all. It's comforting to hear your kind thoughts. I made it through work today but had to take a time out a couple of times. I can't seem to stop crying. Stinky showed up as a stray at my work 11 years ago. She lived at work for about 8 years and was cared for and loved by many people. I was the fortunate one that got to take her home eventually. She had such spunk and was such a stinker that I changed her name from Schnooks to Stinky (short for stinkpot). The house feels so empty now even though I still have my other cat Gracie.

m,

I wish there was an easy way through this. If misery loves company, you've got mine. I've had to put down my 14 year old dog and 16 1/2 year old cat in the last few months.

I guess our mourning just shows how much we loved our pets. That's a good thing.

How's the job search going?

Love, Jean

Hi again Melissa,

Am I imagining it or do I remember when you brought Stinky home? Have you been on the board for 3 years now? It seems to me that I recall when you did and that you had to keep the cats in separate rooms for a while. What kind of cat was she (color?) What kind of cancer did she have? I'm glad that you still have Gracie, but I know what you mean about the house being so quiet.

Love,

Polly

Polly,
I'm always amazed at your memory. Yes, I've been on the board about 3 years ("celebrated" my 3 year GFCF anniversary 2 days ago) and that was about the time I brought Stinky home from work. I changed jobs within my company and left my old office in a house, where Stinky lived, and moved to the main building. It was then that I took her home. She didn't get along with the other cat but they worked out a tolerance for each other. Ironically, Gracie seems to either not notice Stinky is gone or be happy about it. Stinky had the softest long hair and was cream, caramel and brown in color with big green eyes. She had HUGE feet and once, one of my co-workers did some research and believed she was a Norwegian Forest cat, or some such nonsense. She was an excellent mouser (euwww!) and had lots and lots of personality. Not at all a timid cat, even though she was tiny.

I must confess that I am starting to doubt my decision. Did I do it too soon? Was there something else I could have done? Was her quality of life not that bad? I've read that this is a normal reaction but being a person who wants definitive answers, it's hard to not be sure of something. I guess this is part of grieving. I don't know.

Oh Melissa,

It is most definitely part of grieving......doubting your decision. Every single time I have have to euthanize a pet, I have gone through the same misgivings afterward. But I am sure that you did the best thing in this case. Although in humans it is often possible to "buy" additional months/years of life with cancer treatment, don't forget that pets age much more quickly. Intensive cancer treatment may result in only a few more months of life at best.

And don't forget that suffering animals are programmed not to show any signs of pain or discomfort or weakness. In the wild this would put them at increased risk to predators. So, often we do not see the extent to which they are sick.

Stinky sounds like a gorgeous cat. Do you have a photo to share?

Sometimes when I am taking a long walk, I imagine that all of my past pets are trailing behind me in a long line. And I still have dreams about each and every one of them.

Love,

Polly
