Hi Gabes,

Beautiful photos. I recognize the kookaburra, but what on earth is the bird in the last photo? :headscratch:

The bird is a 'Magpie'

very interesting birds, they gather in gangs, and during nesting season can be quite vicious in that they swoop and then peck at people that are walking/riding nearby to the tree.

people riding bicycles in Aus, will put cable ties in the top of the bike helmets (sticking up) to detract the magpies
There have been children that have lost eye's from magpies swooping

In my street, there is a gang of about 10 of them at the top of the street, that wander the footpath..... i have seen them swoop at cats that are running across the road

Well I'll be darn. I didn't recognize it because over here in the western part of the U. S., magpies have a very broad white belt across their belly, and no white on their head (and of course, their beak is black). Yep, they've got some unusual habits.

Thanks,
Tex

Gabes,

I was wondering what the first bird in your pictures was, and when learning that it is the kookaburra (from Tex's post), it brought back fond memories. One of the first songs (besides Polly, Wolly, Doodle) I learned in the English language (in grade-shcool) was Kookaburra. It went like this:

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king in the bush is he
Laugh kookaburra
Laugh kookaburra
Gay your life must be

It was one of my favorite songs to sing when I was (probably) around 9 years old. Now I finally know what the bird looks like :). Thanks for posting those nice pictures Gabes.

Love,
Kari

Kari
what a beautiful co-incidence, only today i rang Polly to wish her happy thanksgiving, and I sang that very song as a message on her answering machine!!!!

When i took the photos of the kookaburra a few weeks ago, i emailed them to Polly, she told me the story that at a nearby zoo they have a kookaburra, and it laughed (its very distinctive call) and polly mimicked the bird call, and it laughed again.

I called Polly the kookaburra whisperer!!!!!

WOW that has made my day that you learnt that song!

my birthday week has been interupted by a moler gone bad, the moler, the absess and some bone was removed today. Now the local has worn off I am in heaps of pain. I took H1 and H2 blockers beforehand to minimise mast cell reaction to the anesthetic. Due to some ongoing Kidney/BP issues i can only take minimal doses of paraceutamal.

thanks for bringing sunshine to a cloudy day

the text from polly's email about the kookaburra
I have met a kookaburra! We have one at our local zoo. Some years ago a handler had the bird out in the open so folks could get up close and personal. He laughed, and I began to imitate him. Well, it must have sounded pretty authentic, because he began intermittent laughing with me. He would laugh and then I, and then he again. Everyone was in hysterics – the handler said he had never seen the bird interact like that before. So I must have some kind of connection to the kookaburra!

the more i interact and learn about the amazing people of this forum, its not just MC that connects us.

Gabes,

LOVE "coincidences" like that  . After I posted last evening, I googled Kookaburra to hear his "laugh" - wow what a voice!!! Then I came on here this morning and saw the posts from you - how fun :).

So sorry you have tooth trouble - ouch - hope you'll be on the mend quickly :xfingers: .

Love,
Kari

Kookaburra whisperer here!

Gabes, I loved your singing of the kookaburra song on my message machine! It made my day! Like Kari, we also learned that song in grade school, and I always loved singing it. Sorry I missed your call - we went to see the movie "Lincoln" last night.

So sorry to hear about your tooth. Sounds dreadful. You KNOW how much I hate the dentist - I am suffering along with you vicariously today. I hope the histamine blockers minimize the effects of the anesthetic and that you don't have to take any wicked antibiotics. Feel better ASAP!

Lots of love,

Polly

I can't get the kookaburra song out of my head!!! he he he

The H1 & H2 blockers have worked well, no mast cell symptoms to the local anesthetic! woo hoo (highly highly recommend this to anyone having dental work)

I am swilling zinc twice a day to protect from infection and assist gum healing.

I think the main cause of pain is where they cut the jaw bone, this morning it is mostly a moderate ache, the pain only increases if i move around too much or bend down (ie to put washing in the front loader)
this was one of my 'known' moler issues that was identified in the CT scan last year, we decided we would deal with each one as we had to type thing. I only have another two to go.

i have made a huge batch of Jelly (jello) - I hope the dude that invented Jello back in medieval times was knighted for his efforts......
