I'm not sure if this is even funny as many of us will have known that it is actually a metaphor for diagnosing...
Two doctors go on a fishing trip.
They see a very good looking and promising river to suit their goal.
As they strap on their gear and step into their wading boots one starts to wonder how deep the river is.
"do you think we can wade through?" he asks his fellow doctor
"I'll consult the guide" he replies.
A few minutes later the doctor with the guide states that the river is knee deep on average.
So the other doctor steps in boldly, wades to the middle and drowns have way across.

Welcome to the family, Hans. The folks here are so supportive of one another. You may be way off on the edge of the bell curve, but you are not alone.
About your "joke," I can't find an emoticon adequate for it.
Everyone who bases their actions on statistics should read "How to lie with statistics" by D. Huff.

I think it is the source of this gem:
Did you know that lipstick causes breast cancer?
Yup! Research shows that 93% of all people who get breast cancer wear lipstick.
Therefore, lipstick causes breast cancer!
Humor is a good way to deal with life's trials.
