Ratz, I Struck Out Again - That's Two Days In a Row
This morning, I tried a bowl of puffed rice, with sugar and milk. Now I'm wondering what I was thinking. It didn't take long, to see the error of my ways. Obviously, I can't handle the lactose. Hiss! Boo!
Bloating, cramps, a little nausea, at times--I just hope it doesn't get worse. I've got to work again tomorrow, and today was bad enough.
Casein works with the 3-day diet, (at least I haven't had any problems with it so far), but the lactose doesn't have the decency to give it enough time to work--it triggers a reaction right away. Sigh.
Love,
Wayne

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Have never figured out how to test lactose all by itself ;-)
The question does bring to mind something that I have pondered about. In the past I have had to consider if a combination of foods or a combination of elements, like casein and lactose, in a single food are just to much of a challenge for my prehistoric genes. IMHO this concept does give credence to how well I do on such simple fare.

Matthew,
One way to test lactose by itself, (short of going to a doctor and doing a "lactose test", by drinking a "lactose cocktail", followed by a blood sugar measurement). is to eat some Breyers Natural Vanilla ice cream. It's available in a version with lactase added, so that it's lactose free, or another version, without the lactase. The stuff with the lactase, is what I've been successfully eating, in my rotation diet.
If you can tolerate it with the lactase added, but not without, then that should be a pretty good indicaion that you are lactose intolerant. I was going to go that route myself, but wasn't able to get to a store that sold Breyers, when I decided to do the test, so I just picked up some milk, instead.

Katy,
That's probably an option for most people, but a couple of years ago, when I was trying to pin down my dairy intolerance, I tried the lactaid tablets, and I always had a reaction to them, almost as bad as my reaction to lactose.
You may recall that almost a year ago, I tried a general enzyme supplement, and had a very prompt and severe reaction, with a lot of vomiting I'm apparently sensitive to concentrated enzyme supplements.
The lactase in the Breyers ice cream works fine, and the product tastes like regular ice cream--I can't detect any off taste due to the lactase. All the lactose free milk that I've ever tried, tasted as though it were spoiled. The flavor of spoiled milk has never appealed to me. LOL.

Jean,
I don't believe I'll be doing any more lactose tests. I spent the night vomiting. Sigh. Strangely, though, no D, at least not yet. I feel rough as a cob, but I finally drug out of bed about 11. I thought I'd see what was happening on the board, and maybe do a little maintenence work, such as back up the database, etc. I think I'll just park in this office chair for the rest of the day.
You're right, this disease sucks.
