a little setback....

Post by wmonique2 »

Tex,

you seem to manage OK for somebody who doesn't enjoy cooking! Some days I surrender and just reach for the cereal box! I used to eat out a lot in nice places, no more...it's more trouble than it's worth. I guess that's why this disease is called MC (as in Miserable Condition  )

That sounds delish Tex, but I can't handle that much fat right now. Lucky you!
I think you are right Monique. I will , at least with soups, just make them and eat the left overs as fast as I can. I don't really freeze much else. Unlike you and Tex, I cook dinner for three people almost every day. We are all on our own for breakfast and lunch. My lunch many times is the dinner from the night before :) Seems to work most of the time.

You know, to my way of thinking, that's one of the main disadvantages to having this disease. I find that not being willing to take a chance on eating out puts a real damper on my desire to travel, or even to just get out and about. I've become a homebody. :sigh: Of course, it's my choice, but apparently I would rather be a healthy homebody than a sick traveler.

You just described me, Tex, a homebody, eating healthy, not wanting to travel or take a chance on restaurants. It's the choice I have made too and I find I am OK with it.

So true Tex. I'm starting to become a big time homebody myself though I do frequent Red Robin and Rockfish cafe. Probably will need to cut that out....too risky. My husband and kid are planning their first vacation without me.....to Yellowstone next summer! I wouldn't have been able to go anyway due to my fear of flying and now fears of food and not having bathroom access at all times. No more hiking for me. It's going to bum me out at first but I'll get over it. Not happy about being a homebody at my age but it is what it is. I do hope to make the trip back to Destin, FL one day. And I do intend to keep getting out on the dance floor whenever I can. I will not let MC keep me from dancing. I was born dancing and will die doing it....lol!

I don't know about becoming a homebody...I've been taking my own food to restaurants (Yes!) I meet weekly with some 30 friends on sundays and we always end up in restaurants. Well, I have paid a price for eating some foods even though I am super cautious. I went 2 weeks ago to a chinese (collective decision, not mine) restaurant and I got the stuff without soy or gluten. And guess what? I still got sick. Must be the MSG...

So I take with me rice cakes and GF crackers and get something small like chicken. I have the double burden of GF and SF. Anyway, I am not willing to stop living. I work around it in hopes that I'll be OK. Although, when somebody wants to invite to a restaurant I find myself inviting everybody to my house, that way I know what I am eating.

I have a couple of xmas parties coming up and I'll be taking my own food. I went to one last sunday and I took my own GF sandwich although there was tons of food but everything looked suspicious to me. Boy, am I fun to have around...

Now, Terri, dancing? I'll die shimmying, dah'lin' I belly dance twice a week...

Love you all,

I'm with you Monique. I go to some restaurants and do the best I can. I just went to one today with a friend. I ordered a hamburger with no bun and a baby green salad. Oil and vinegar. I did steel a few french fries from her plate though :)

But I have to say, that I am doing better then others, so I guess it really depends on how much each of us has healed. If I end up"paying" for something I ate, it's usually not until the next morning. I still love to dance and I hike all the time. I hope that I can continue to do all of this. It's life and I like to get out there and live it!

Leah & Monique....I needed that! Thanks! I didn't realize restaurants would let you bring your own food. I will have to try that. I do plan on being out at restaurants with my family but will wait till I get home to eat my meal. I have a Christmas gathering at my in-laws this weekend and this will be a big test on my nerves. This time of year is always rough for me. Am bringing my own food of course.

@Monique....I love belly dancing too! My fave is Zumba but it gets my heart rate up way too high.

I try to look at it not as having to stop living but as figuring out how to live differently. I imagine that what that "living differently" looks like is different for each of us. I have in fact found my homebody status to have some unexpected benefits, paying attention to my spiritual health as well as my physical health, not relying so much on distractions, finding contentment in less rather than more. It is an interesting journey. Perhaps what starts out as an obstacle, illness, is actually a gift,

Terri,

Eat BEFORE you go somewhere. Not AFTER you get home. You won't be able to resist all the temptations. I did that last week for a potluck lunch. I ate before I went (not much but enough to keep me from devouring stuff I shouldn't) then I just picked on stuff that felt safe. And I did fine. And when it's potluck, I always bring something safe that I can eat.

As for restaurants, I always order something small and leave a generous tip as if I ate normal.

Jean---I totally get what you said. I had periods when I felt I needed to "go within" and I try to balance the within and the social interaction. I know that I'm happier when I interact with people. I am very gregarious and isolation isn't for me. I've had a couple of very difficult years (MC and losing my husband) and what got me out of the gutter were my friends (here and in real life) who dragged me kicking and screaming out of the house when all I wanted to do is stay in bed.

I like the way you think, Jean! Your posts always inspire me and have gotten me much closer to acceptance of this nasty disease. Thanks!

Monique...I didn't realize you had gone through so much. Sorry to hear about that. Yes, it does do us good to get out there and socialize. I went to a wedding in October and had a total blast. Was so good to see people I hadn't seen in a while. I have two Christmas gatherings coming up, a New Year's eve party and a wedding and I plan on being at all of them.

Yes, there is a lot of temptation now that I'm getting out more, but I've been able to abstain. I can't believe my willpower these days. The hardest thing for me is not getting into the chips they bring you at the Mexican restaurants, but I manage to keep my fingers out of them. It would be nice if I could go out and just get a little salad but no can do for now. I will take your advice and maybe eat before but honestly, I think I'll be okay no matter when I eat. Not saying I'll be super happy about it but I can deal with it.

Hope you are still doing well with the anti-histamines.

This system, though, may present a problem for people who have no time and like to freeze or reheat food. It's even a bigger problem if you cook for one (my case). But hey, we have MC! No one said it was going to be easy

Hey Monique and Tex!!

I'm single too and have two freezers!! I don't have any problems with thawed food but I do buy really good quality locally produced free range etc. Cooking is OK - I am relearning and trying new recipes and I have to say enjoying it! But that said I have to do batch cooking because with work and music commitments I often don't get much time to eat and now I have gone GF I can't nip down to McD's or Subway!!!

Monique, you might have a really sensitive palate - most good chefs do - and that's why you notice a taste difference! The only foods I have noticed a difference with (frozen vs fresh) are tuna and trout! Neither are good frozen and I always buy fresh. However, salmon freezes brilliantly (IMO) so I do think it is probably a taste thing.

That said I do not freeze hot - as in just cooked food - because it warms the freezer which is not good for the already frozen food!! I leave it to go cold then freeze! Very different from commercial operations no doubt!

Anyway, there is my input (FWIW!!!!)

:iagree:

Also, if the food is cooled down first, then freezing will progress much more rapidly once it begins, because the center temperature will be much cooler, which will allow the cooling front (freeze line) to progress much more rapidly, to more closely approximate commercial "quick freeze" processes.
