MC turns into Crohn?

Post by Julie »

Hi everybody,

I heard something really strange. Is it really true that MC could turn into Crohn's Disease? I thought that MC and Crohn's disease were two seperate things...

Thank you!

Julie

ps: Happy Holidays!! (I know it's early, but I just love the hollidays!)

Hi Julie,

Yes, they are two separate diseases. IMO, we have the same risk of developing Crohn's disease as anyone in the general population — no more and no less.

That said, if any autoimmune disease (included MC) is not properly treated, then we have a higher risk of developing other autoimmune diseases. However, if we control the symptoms of MC, then that minimizes the risk that we might develop another autoimmune disease.

The point is, having MC does not make us immune to developing any other disease, but if we control the symptoms, then the odds of developing any other autoimmune disease (including Crohn's disease) is very low — probably about the same as the odds of anyone else in the general population developing the disease.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Hi,

thanks Tex.

I was beginning to worry. I was thinking to myself: Oh no, not another chronic bowel disease!
