"Clinical Research Network"

Post by birdlover3 »

Hi All,

In our local paper my husband showed me an ad that says "Do you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)? They are looking for local people to be involved in a clinical research study of an "investigational medicine".

Do we who have MC constitute IBS? Opinions on whether anyone would consider this a worthwhile thing to do or adviseable. I was curious.
Diagnosed with Collagenous Colitis November 2012.

No. "IBS" is a diagnosis that doctors hand out when they don't have the foggiest idea what's wrong with a patient. If you have an actual diagnosis for an IBD (MC), then you wouldn't qualify to participate in an "IBS" study, (unless the researchers are so naive that they don't know any better).

Many of us were first "diagnosed" with "IBS" initially, before our GI doc got around to taking biopsy samples, so that he or she could determine a "real" diagnosis.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

When my symptoms started in Aug., 2009, I waited until Sept. and then went in for stool culture and blood work, and my PCP handed me a pamphlet for IBS. It wasn't until June, 2010 that I had a colonoscopy with biopsies which gave me the diagnose of LC.

Dear Birdlover,

I am sure the researchers are well intentioned, but as Tex and Paula indicate the first truth they need to learn (if they are genuine scientists) is to realize that IBS is a non diagnosis. If their study can reveal this truth it would be worthwhile. If it is the first step to market some "investigational medicine" well.....I would want to know more what they mean by that.

Best wishes, Ant
