Sisters 50th

Post by Liz »

I have been very busy this week doing the cake for my sister's 50th wedding anniversary this Saturday. They are going to renew their vows. Here is a pic of the cake.

I have not done one for a while & had to think about what to do. But it is just like riding a bicycle I guess. A bit shakey on the piping but I was pleased with the flowers. I made the roses then painted them gold.

Thanks Shirley. I used to do quite a few & did all of my daughters' wedding & engagement cakes. The first one I ever did was for my Mothers 78th birthday & then did one each year. You know when she died at 89 she still had every arrangement off every cake that I had done for her each year. You could see how I had progressed over time.

Ps have you settled in OK??. How did you fare with the hurricanes??

WOW is right! What an elegant cake! What kind was it? I sure wouldn't want to take the first piece and ruin that masterpiece! LOL! You are quite talented, Liz.

It is a fruit cake Polly. It is covered with icing & the flowers are made from special moulding past made from icing sugar etc. I then paint them with veg dyes or petal dust & leave them to dry before wiring them into sprays. It is fun.

Here is a couple of pics of daughters wedding & engagement cakes

Liz, do you use marzipan (sp?)? My Mother used to make cakes for weddings, birthdays, etc. and she did a lot of work for professional caterers. The way she made the flowers and things sounds a lot like what you do. She rolled out the petals by hand with a small rolling pin thingie and stuck the petals together to make the flower. They were on wires or toothpicks. Her flowers were very delicate and realistic. I inherited none of her talent

Yours are very beautiful. I know your sister will be thrilled. I wouldn't want to be the one to cut it either.

Hi Shirley

I don't use marzipan, I use something similar which is called fondant which you roll out the same as marzipan and mold around the cake. I make the flowers in the same way as your Mum and I also make them by cutting working cone shapes into small flowers. Great fun, like playing with plasticine

 My Mom enjoyed doing the flowers too. I think it's quite an art.
