Can being sick make things a bit more active?
Hi all. I thought I had a bad cold, but it turned out to be a bit worse ( chills, slight temp). Six days later, I still don't feel great and am hacking up wads of green gunk ( sorry, kind of gross) . Anyway, i had already asked if taking Sudafed could give me D, but can just being sick give me D? Things have been a bit touchy even though I am not eating much.

Hi Leah - I am sorry you're not doing well, and that it has been going on for so long. Actually, I got up this morning and wanted to ask the same question, and then I saw your thread. I have also been experiencing coughing (with the gross stuff), chills, elevated temp (100.2) and have D more often than what has been normal for me. I am assuming it will pass on it's own, but it sure feels miserable. My appetite has not been good the last couple of days. I am wondering what types of foods you have been able to eat.
I hope you are through the worst of it, and that you start feeling better soon.

Leah/Paula,
Sorry you're not feeling well. What always seems to work for me when I'm sick is home made chicken soup. It feels very soothing and is easy to digest. It also seems to calm down my gut.
Hope you both feel better soon.
Love,
Kari

Thanks guys. Yes, i do feel better today (7th day). I would have loved someone else to make me some soup, but I didn't have the energy to do even that. I did have a couple cans of Wolfgang Pucks organic chicken and rice soup that I ate. I made some rice. I had applesauce. Potato.I just wasn't that hungry. Unfortunately I lost about 3 pounds that I could ill afford. I'm sure I'll put them back on in a hurry though.
Paula it sounds like you have exactly what I had. Hope you feel better soon.

When I have a cold or flu it causes me more bathroom activity. Being run-down and anxious does too.
I took 10 days of Entocort over the holidays and then did a quick taper off. I've been ultra-strict about my diet ever since and am definitely feeling better.
I love GF canned chicken soup when I am sick. I keep several cans of the Health Valley, Gluten Free Café variety on hand. I will have to check out the Wolfgang Puck variety also.
I received a lot of GF products for Xmas and am having fun trying them out. After two years of eating differently I am noticing my taste buds and cravings have changed. I now like the taste of weird things like anchovies on pizza, and olives (which I used to detest). Anyone else noticed such changes? I wonder if it is because I'm eating less salt and more meat. My sense of smell, cravings, and taste buds have really changed.

Dear Cory,
Best wishes, Ant
Mine certainly have too. I appreciate the foods I can eat much more than when I could eat "anything". Perhaps, I have grown to appreciate real food (as distinct from "industrial" food). After two years of eating differently I am noticing my taste buds and cravings have changed.
Best wishes, Ant

Leah....we have a restaurant here in Houston called Mellow Mushroom that makes gluten free, vegan pizza. GF dough with a vegan cheese. Now that I'm thinking about it....maybe that vegan cheese has soy in it. Crud! And I was thinking about eating there! I don't know what to replace tomato sauce with. Wonder what it would taste like without the tomato sauce? I miss Pizza.
Hoping things have settled down for you now that you sound like you are getting better.

Hi Lesley,
I make my own gluten-free pizza crust as I have the dough attachment on my ninja blender. I spread on Tomatoe Sause (not spaghetti sauce) then grate on some Parmesan cheese, which is a rare cheese I can tolerate I can't eat soft cheeses), then i throw on some veggies and GF Boar's Head pepperoni. I've been eating it a lot. I'm Italian so that helps!
Dear Ant,
I agree wholeheartedly, this disease can make one appreciate food in a spiritual way. It's natural, organic & I've worked diligently to prepare it. By the time I sit down to eat it, I often feel blessed and thankful for this wonderful meal I am about to partake in. I do miss eating out with friends but I'm no longer willing to risk restaurants after a few gut wrenching experiences.

Leah - I believe there are quite a few GF pizza crusts on the market, and you can use a pesto sauce without cheese (or with vegan cheese) instead of tomato based sauce. Then of course you can add any tolerated meat/veggies as toppings. I tried this a while back at a local pizza restaurant with great success (unfortunately, it has since closed down). Now I'm working up my courage to try to make it at home - thanks Cory for reminding me that the possibility exists .

Kari

You're right kari. I can eat Pesto that I make, but I find the whole thing very unsatisfying without cheese. Even when I was "well", my mantra was : "if it's not really good, don't bother eating it". It helped me... and my clients make wise food choices and not eat crap just because it was there. So, I still don't bother eating things that aren't yummy. I'd rather take that pesto and put it over GF pasta with maybe a little sausage. Now THAT'S YUMMY!
